I've seen them for a while but I started simming ever since I was a little kid, and, being a kid, can't join. I'm 18 now, but still don't have the guts to start off in this virtual world. My flight experience is literally nothing in real life, but in the sim world, I'm alright in general aviation, starting to get the hang of actually using navigation radios as the only way to navigate (GPS on add-on aircraft, I mainly fly A2A C172 and C182, are big FPS drainers on my laptop). Regarding airliners, virtually nothing, I have flown the 737 and 777 a few times, but nothing special there, and due to the huge amount of pre-flight planning, I've dropped those and returned to general aviation. I guess the only remarkable (not really) thing is that I can use an E-6B, lol. My knowledge in ATC phraseology is confined to what Prepar3D/FSX uses, if that is even enough. Anyways, enough talk, I'm gonna get straight to the point: Anything I need before I can start flying in? Would some sort of training be recommended? Oh, it's nice to meet you all, by the way. There you have all majors informations and procedures that you need to fly and enjoy it! I recommend that you have the least familiarity with the aircraft that will fly online. PMs to controllers or other pilots when you want/need clarification increases learning and decreases misunderstandings. - The network's philosophy is friendliness in a learning environment, people should be prepared to accept anyone's "shortcomings" in simulating real world flying. Still, you will come across people who for some reason turns to anger, be it controllers or pilots. It happens. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation at any time which you feel can't be resolved between you, the command .wallop followed by a free-text message briefly describing the situation will attract the aid of a network supervisor, who's whole purpose is to [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ist members and resolve conflicts. Once started you will never be able to fly offline again.. it will look... empty Together with all the suggestions you already received from others I suggest you to enroll as a student in one of the approved VATSIM flight schools to get your ratings. I did it and it is really an invaluable experience because it does not only give you the training by itself but it also gives you the opportunity of being part of events with a specific focus on your skills. VATITA, ie, hosts regularly VFR events in interesting scenarios and challenging airspaces.
