Andres Braun 848109 Posted July 3, 2006 at 04:23 AM Posted July 3, 2006 at 04:23 AM Hey guys, Just entered VATUSA.org and I can see someone put the flag of the US for the conmemoration of the 4th of July. My question is, (since im a foreigner), doesnt the flag has 50 stars, and not 15 as the one in VATUSA shows? Correct me if Im wrong, but that flag got removed back in the 1800's (after more states joined the republic) Andres Braun ZLA Senior Controller
Nicholas Bartolotta 912967 Posted July 3, 2006 at 04:32 AM Posted July 3, 2006 at 04:32 AM Andres, recently the US released an elaborate plan to merge many states. So yes, now there are 15. Just kidding! Still 50! Nick Bartolotta - ZSE Instructor, pilot at large "Just fly it on down to within a inch of the runway and let it drop in from there." - Capt. Joshua Ridderhoff 873800 Posted July 3, 2006 at 05:15 AM Posted July 3, 2006 at 05:15 AM Haha! That's pretty funny. Actually, there's more than just the 15 stars different about that flag. That's actually the 15 star, 15 stripe U.S. flag -- the only U.S. flag to have more than 13 stripes. Also known as "The Star-Spangled Banner." Yep, this is the actual historical flag that flew at Ft. McHenry immortalized by Francis Scott Key in what has since become the U.S. anthem of the same name. http://www.usflag.org/history/the15starflag.html /s/ Josh Ridderhoff ZLC Senior Controller Fly ZLC! | ZLC Pilot & Controller Forums
Richard Jenkins Posted July 3, 2006 at 05:16 AM Posted July 3, 2006 at 05:16 AM "The 15-star, 15-stripe flag was authorized by the Flag Act of January 13, 1794, adding 2 stripes and 2 Stars. The regulation went into effect on May 1, 1795. This flag was the only U.S. Flag to have more than 13 stripes. It was immortalized by Francis Scott Key during the bombardment of Fort McHenry, Sept 13, 1814. The image above is representative of the actual flag that flew over Fort McHenry on that day and which is now preserved in the Smithsonian Museum. You can notice the "tilt" in some of the stars just as in the original Star Spangled Banner" RJ
