Andrew Musselman Posted July 3, 2006 at 04:45 PM Posted July 3, 2006 at 04:45 PM TGIF will be paying a visit to KORD (Chicago O'Hare) on Friday, July 7th. ZAU will have 14 - 16 controllers online for your enjoyment. Maybe your "VA" doesn't fly to O'Hare? Don't worry KMDW (Chicago Midway) will be staffed as well. Many of our controllers are real world pilots and/or controllers. So come experience the professional ATC of ZAU. Look for staffing to begin around 2300z and on til atleast 0500z. See you there! Lance Williams Posted July 8, 2006 at 05:19 AM Posted July 8, 2006 at 05:19 AM Hey, just a big thanks to Chicago for hosting tonight's TGIF! If you want the ultimate compliment, take what our resident "Retired" NWA 747 Captain said on our Ventrilo server after landing..."Wow, they really did a fantastic job. That's the first time I can remember being vectored off the STAR right to the IAF, then cleared to land the way they do it in the real-world." His comment, not mine, but I had a great time! I only wish I wasn't photographing a wedding next weekend and could join for round 2. Thank you, Lance W. Will be fixing up some houses on a missions trip, but I am sure it will be just as fun. Thanks to everyone flying in for being such great pilots. Can't say we had any "major" screw ups. Now it's time to rest up, refuel, and file for MDW/MKE next week!
Thomas Parker Posted July 8, 2006 at 11:37 AM Posted July 8, 2006 at 11:37 AM To the Chicago Crew, You guys completely rocked last night! Center did a wonderful job handling a bunch of us as we all piled onto Bradford VOR at the same time. Approach, same compliment. He did a great job keeping us all separated and getting us lined up onto the localizer for 14R. Tower, I don't know. I caught them right in the middle of a shift change, and in my furious typing of messages to TWR, I accidently hit the slew button and had to immediately disconnect! Looking forward to next week! Mike Roda 908206 Posted July 8, 2006 at 02:54 PM Posted July 8, 2006 at 02:54 PM I had a bit of an odd experience which I don't think was very real-world. I was in-bound to one of the satalite airports near Midway. When I asked for the VOR approach I was told by center he could not accommodate the request. I never heard that before so I asked why and was told something to the effect that they usually just do ILS approaches, which I took it to mean he didn't know how to work a VOR approach. This was an instructor BTW. We ended up agreeing on the LOC/DME approach and he dutifully vectored me all around his airspace and finally to intercept the localizer. The odd thing is that on the last leg of my route I was flying direct to the VOR which was the IAF for all of the approaches at that airport, including the VOR and LOC/DME approaches, so all he had to do is just descend me and clear me for the approach without any vectoring. There are a couple other nit-picky things I could mention but that's the main thing. Mike Roda

Yes, I couldn't get any .pdf files to open for some reason(KLOT is not an airport I already have approach plates printed for), and the approaches were swamped so I had pointouts from the other centers to keep you with me until approach could get to you. Eventually after 20 minutes I got a point out from approach to get you in or it might have been quite a long time -- But yeah, I couldn't open up any pdf files until I restarted my computer later in the night. Yeah, sorry for the spin Mike.
