James Ward Posted January 13, 2019 at 10:01 PM Posted January 13, 2019 at 10:01 PM I’m not a controller which is why I’m asking the following: Do you guys have access to B748 Approved Taxi Route charts at your respective airports? I currently use Navigraph charts, which does provide the B748 Approved Taxi Charts. So far, I’ve noted three separate occasions where I’m flying the PMDG B748 only to be told to taxi on taxiways not approved for the aircraft. When I reply unable, I’ve found that on all occasions, the controllers had no clue about the restrictions. One even tried to search for a chart online to no avail (and ty for trying), and ended up letting me taxi at my discretion. After that, I decided to do an online search myself, and to my surprise, I can’t find the charts either.
Board of Governors Simon Kelsey Posted January 14, 2019 at 12:27 AM Board of Governors Posted January 14, 2019 at 12:27 AM Hi James, This will depend very largely on both the experience and local knowledge of the controller and how much information is provided to them by their vACC. The information about taxiway capabilities will be there in the local AIPs but normally in the textual data so it is not very easy to access immediately (you have found one immediate advantage of using commercial charts which are tailored toward pilots rather than the free, but raw AIP charts). Some vACCs will have distilled this data in to more easy-to-use docomeentation for controllers and/or will train it, others may not have. In some cases it can be even more confusing as, for example, the taxiway may be wide enough for Code F aircraft on its own, but not if another aircraft is on a parallel taxiway or runway, for example. Just as in real life it is up to you to check that the taxiways are appropriate for your aircraft type, as you are doing, and politely decline if the route you are given is inappropriate -- hopefully giving the controller a steer in the process!
