Al Klayton 1398552 Posted April 13, 2019 at 03:15 PM Author Posted April 13, 2019 at 03:15 PM If the only ATC coverage is Approach/Departure Control at the destination airport, what is the recommendation on how far out to contact Approach Control? What if the only ATC coverage at the destination is Tower? Thx, Al
Andreas Fuchs Posted April 13, 2019 at 08:54 PM Posted April 13, 2019 at 08:54 PM Hi Al, if you find APP being active, I suggest contacting them somewhere between 50 NM and 80 NM out. This is just a rough guess and if they need you earlier they will send you a contact-request. Should only TWR be active, contact them either when you are joining the ILS/RNP final approach or, if you happen to fly VFR, before entering the control zone or whatever airspace TWR controls. As a VFR pilot you require clearance to enter the airspace, if it's a controlled aerodrome. Al Klayton 1398552 Posted April 13, 2019 at 10:05 PM Author Posted April 13, 2019 at 10:05 PM Andreas, Contacting Approach about 50 NM out is about what I would have guessed. And I was thinking about 10 to 15NM for the Tower. Thanks for the information. Al
