The script calculates the better runway for departure or landing, for the for longest runway. For CYYZ, and 150 degrees for wind, the better direction is 23/24R/24L. This calculation consider the 10w degrees for magnetic declination of CYYZ. For this beta version, we consider only the longest runway. Soon, I will complete the script for other runways to be considereded. [EDIT] I listened CYYZ atis from liveatc. They inform wind for 120 degress, different for 150 for NOAA or VATSIM metar, thats inform 150 degrees. This makes the difference between runway in use. Thanks. Andreas Fuchs Posted May 2, 2019 at 05:37 PM Posted May 2, 2019 at 05:37 PM Hi Evandro, as per e-mail by Mike, this does not work in all places. There are quite a few airports that operate a "preferential runway system" that will allow up to 5 knots of tailwind, until a certain runway will not be used anymore. I am not aware of a list, because there's nobody who maintains such a list. The source of all information is the AIP of each country and the contained information for each specific airport. Robert Shearman Jr Posted May 3, 2019 at 02:07 AM Posted May 3, 2019 at 02:07 AM At the end of the day, this is a great tool for getting a runway *recommendation* but it still doesn't substitute for the runway [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ignment configuration that an active, online VATSIM controller will choose to use, based on the SOP at that airport -- which considers not just wind and runway length, but noise abatement, traffic flow at nearby satellite fields, etcetera. My fear is that it will be another in the ever-growing [Mod - Happy Thoughts]nal of tools for pilots to use to argue with the virtual controllers over which runways should be in use at any given time. I hope that instead of listing the "runway in use" it can list the "recommended runway" with a disclaimer along the lines of "Local SOP may consider factors not used in this recommendation. Defer to active runways chosen by online VATSIM controllers." Cheers, -R.
Andreas Fuchs Posted May 3, 2019 at 09:37 AM Posted May 3, 2019 at 09:37 AM What VATSIM needs is a fully integrated system and database. No more local homepages of ARTCCs and VACCs, but everyone uses a set of given layouts and directly feeds into VATSIM's database. This way it would be really easy to define things like "preferential runway rules" worldwide and then have some script/function at VATSIM's server make sound recommendations for the runway in use. These could also be read out by tools such as VatSpy, Qutescoop, Accomeap, because it would be part of the official data-file provided by VATSIM.
