Please help me nip this in the bud so I can log on. I am an Aviation firefighter a reasonably large UK hub, + 3m pax per year. And wherever we are on the airfield or whatever we are doing, we monitor Tower on channel 1. Tower will give clearance, taxi, and takeoff instructions. I believe we do have a clearance delivery but it is for GA.

My question is thus. If there is no ATC anywhere near my home hub, can I do as I please? Do i have to let somebody know I would like clearance?

Lets pretend I have nobody talking at my hub. But EGKK and EGCC is manned up. Can somebody run me through what my actions would be? so I can finally log on. Because at the moment I am seriously considering P2ATC but would like to give this a go.

Many thanks

As Vatsim practice top-down controlling, you'll need to call the controller responcible for the sector you are located at, if DEL, GND, TWR or APP isn't online. You wouldn't call delivery at a nearby airport like EGLL or EGKK. You can find the sectors at https://www.vatsim.uk/operations/sectors. If no ATC is covering your area, no clearence is needed.

Thanks. So I just loaded up to observe, EGCC where a GND and ATIS was available (why would there be a ground and no tower??)

anyway, I connected through XPilot and nothing happened. What I mean is, it stated I was connected but I could still see all my WT3 traffic. And when I tried to listen to the ATIS nothing.

Is XPilot all i need?

With our new radio simulation you may be not able to listen to the ATIS from another airfield as long as you are parked on the ground. If you cannot see any ATC for airfield, but an overlying APP or CTR controller, why not send him a chat message and ask him whether he is covering your airfield or if you should operate on own discretion on UNICOM 122.800 . If it was UNICOM, just set it active on COM1 (please make sure you do not have 122.800 set on any other radio in your cockpit) and make reports of your intentions and position, e.g. "[name of airfield] traffic, [your callsign] taxiing to holding point runway XY for [state your plan, e.g. 'traffic circuits for touch and go' or 'VFR flight to ABCDE at xxxx ft']. I guess you are getting it.

Because that controller has only so far become certified to work Ground. VATSIM controllers are quite literally trained from the ground up. Because of the top-down hierarchy, one cannot simply hop straight into an Enroute position without first knowing the mechanics of the positions below them.
