Eric Fraenkel-Gaffr 890 Posted November 18, 2006 at 12:28 AM Posted November 18, 2006 at 12:28 AM Hello, Here is the trick that I found thanks also to Andrew who helped me out on this too, on how to backtrack a plane onto a runway. In CYYC one of our runways is runway 25/07. Taxiway C leads to 1/3 of the length but there is no taxiway leading to the threshold of 25. The only way to get to the threshold is to backtrack onto the runway. So I built a taxiway that I called [TAXIWAY P25] for "position 25" and I entered two coordinates for P25 (a taxiway has to have a minimum of 2 positions so only one set of coordinates isn't enough). The first set of coordinates is exactly the one found for the threshold of 25 in RUNWAY 25/07 to make P25 intersect with runway 25. The second set of coordinates is another point outside of the runway, and I don't think it matters where, as long as it doesn't intersect with the runway or with anything else. It just allows TWR trainer to recognize this as a taxiway. But the airplane won't need to go there. THEN to my aircraft I said TAXI C 25 P25 The airplane taxied C, backtracked 25 and called holding short of P25 on the runway 25. So far so good. If you try POS 25 or CTO 25 now that's not gonna work. Airplane is going to say, well I am not on the runway! (Thanks Ross for giving planes such nice attitudes! ) So I told my plane TAXI P25 25. The aircraft smartly turned around without even exiting the runway and called holding short 25! There it was! Then POS 25 or CTO 25 and the illusion was complete! And that's how I did it! Eric. Ross Carlson Posted November 18, 2006 at 12:34 AM Posted November 18, 2006 at 12:34 AM Brilliant! What happens if you do "taxi c 7 p25 25" ? Then you might be able to immediately issue the cto or pos commands without first having to issue "taxi 25". Also, note that "pos 25" is not a vaild instruction. It's just "pos". The aircraft already knows what runway it's holding short of. Same goes for "cto 25". That will actually cause the aircraft to take off on runway 25, then turn to a departure heading of 25 once it has climbed out a ways ... obviously not what you want. Eric Fraenkel-Gaffr 890 Posted November 18, 2006 at 12:40 AM Author Posted November 18, 2006 at 12:40 AM Hello Yes telling the aircraft TAXI C 7 P25 25 works even better. Only one sentence and the aircraft is ready to go. Eric. VATCAN16
