Pacific Oceanic Procedures - FNO Dec 18 - I gave up

I do not fly online that often and very rarely in oceanic airspace but this past Friday (12.18.20) I thought I would make the long haul from KSFO to PHNL.  I was handed off from Oakland Center to San Francisco Radio told to check crossing BAART.  I contacted SFO radio via text and was quickly told not to submit position reports, to log with CPDLC.  Checking the Pacific Oceanic (if that is the right one) website https://pacificoceanic.vatsim.net/, no guide for pilots on oceanic procedures, also looks like it has not been updated in a while.  I do not have CPDLC in my aircraft and unable to find any resources on procedures and not wanting to bother a busy controller I abandoned my flight.

So all you knowledgeable peoples, what is the right way to cross the Pacific Pond?

Very few aircraft have internal cpdlc systems. I only know of nattrak but that is for North Atlantic oceanic stuff.

Hey Andrew,

here is quick guide how to use CPDLC & PDC on VATSIM and what addon to install.

Hope it helps you a bit.

I was watching a friend's livestream while he was flying from KLAX to PHNL during that event, and I heard the controller say they were simulating CPDLC using private messages, much as we do with PDCs. And obviously ADS-B can be simulated on any controller's scope because the position of all aircraft on the network is known, whether the simulated aircraft has simulated ADS-B reporting equipment or not.  I did hear the controller say that if anyone wanted to simulate flying in vintage airliners, he would accept traditional non-radae position reports.

I agree that a reference page somewhere explaining this would be beneficial, if one doesn't exist already.

Cheers,
-R.

Thats because its a website for controllers not pilots.

My.vatsim.net / learning centre / aviation skills / oceanic and polar flying has tutorials for pilots. The exception is you dont need an oceanic clearance for the pacific.

Maybe (probably!) I'm missing something, but isn't this the main issue? Must pilots be CPDLC capable in this scenario?
