Departing Nottingham EGBN?

Hi.

If I depart Nottingham Airfield I'm straight into the East Mids TMA when I get above 1000ft. If they are online what do I say to them if I've already departed? Or do I call them from the ground before takeoff? Assuming I'm VFR...I'd like to learn to survive VFR in MSFS as the scenery is so good.

Either remain outside CAS and call for entry or given the low level of the airspace above, I'd be tempted to call when you're about to roll requesting entry when airborne

Hi Jim, have a look at the Nottingham airspace chart below. Nottingham (EGBN), sits under East Mids CTA-1, which has a base of 2500ft. So you can actually climb all the way to 2499ft without needing to contact EGNX_APP (although I wouldn't recommend climbing above 2000ft to give you at least 500ft separation). CTA-2 to the south has a base of 1500ft, so you can't go above 1499ft there without a clearance, but that's around 3 nms away from the runway.

So if you're going South then you've got plenty of time to depart climbing to 2000ft, and call EGNX_APP for a zone transit. If you're going West you can continue outside controlled airspace at 2000ft, or call EGNX_APP for a zone transit if you want to go higher. If you're going North or East then there's no controlled airspace below FL195 once you're outside the EGBN ATZ (dotted circle).
