Ryan Gamurot 994490 Posted January 4, 2007 at 07:26 AM Posted January 4, 2007 at 07:26 AM Hello everyone, I'm certain I'm not the first to be completely lost here. Anyway, I had just registered several hours before midnight on New Years Eve but still hadn't recived a VATUSA account or anything. I'm guessing that everyone is still in "Party Mode", but I am rather anxious to learn about ATC. While I'm waiting, is there any materials I could look through? I'm already going through the ASRC manual. I did try to just sit in as an observer but I didn't have a clue what to do. So if anyone could explain that and a good airport to go to, I'd be very greatful. Thanks Ryan Gamurot Lucky to live Hawai'i
Ruth McTighe 824054 Posted January 4, 2007 at 03:45 PM Posted January 4, 2007 at 03:45 PM Try the ASRC Observers Guide from avsim or direct from http://www.cix.co.uk/~smctighe/Files/ASRC%20v1.1%20Observers%20Guide.doc to explain how to set up as an observer. Ryan Gamurot 994490 Posted January 4, 2007 at 09:47 PM Author Posted January 4, 2007 at 09:47 PM Thank you for your help. I've finally had a chance to do some observing but it wasn't very busy. Just three aircraft sitting at the gate. Ryan Gamurot Lucky to live Hawai'i
Ruth McTighe 824054 Posted January 4, 2007 at 09:54 PM Posted January 4, 2007 at 09:54 PM Glad you made it! You might also like to download a great little program called ServInfo (also free) from http://www.avsim.com/hangar/utils/servinfo/home.htm which will let you see what controllers and pilots are online all over the world. That way you can see which airports are busier and go and observe the fun there. Ryan Gamurot 994490 Posted January 5, 2007 at 08:57 AM Author Posted January 5, 2007 at 08:57 AM Thank you Ruth for the link to ServInfo. It really helped but I think I'm not quite there with ASRC. I never hear or see anyone talking. I'm slowly getting it though. I just have one more question if you don't mind. I remember seeing that I should hear from VATUSA in about 24 hours after selecting their division. I know that this is probably done manually so it would take awhile. Well, it's been a few days now and I still havn't heard from anyone. Should I just keep waiting or try to contact someone? I already emailed the webmaster maybe two days ago and I didn't even hear from him. Thanks again Ryan Gamurot Lucky to live Hawai'i
Ruth McTighe 824054 Posted January 5, 2007 at 06:45 PM Posted January 5, 2007 at 06:45 PM I'll let someone from the USA answer the membership question. with the inability to see or hear communications, I'd suggest then when you find a contorller that's not TOO busy and try to observe him, send him a prviate message and he should be able to help you test things. It sounds as if you haven't got things configured properly, but it's easier to sort out when your'e talking to someone online. However have you actually set up a VSCS button for a controller who is online at the time? If so, post here what you put in the configuraiton boxes. Ryan Gamurot 994490 Posted January 5, 2007 at 07:21 PM Author Posted January 5, 2007 at 07:21 PM In the VSCS, I could only find the frequency and ID (118.100 and HNL_TWR). Not the Voice Server or Channel. After that, I made sure that XMTR ON and RCVR ON was green. After things didn't work, I looked through the manual again and it said the lower left box should say G/G 1 but I was on A/G 1. Could that be the source of my problem? About sending a private message, how do I do that? Thanks Ryan Gamurot Lucky to live Hawai'i
Ruth McTighe 824054 Posted January 5, 2007 at 09:42 PM Posted January 5, 2007 at 09:42 PM I really would recommend reading the Observers Guide that I linked to above, which answers virtually all of your questions. The only one it doesn't is the lower left box, which should definitely read A/G 1 Ruth Ruth McTighe Heathrow Director, Essex Radar, Thames Radar, London Information [Mod - Happy Thoughts]t webmistress CIX VFR Club http://www.cixvfrclub.org.uk/ Webmistress Plan-G http://www.tasoftware.co.uk/ Now not a VATanything
Ryan Gamurot 994490 Posted January 5, 2007 at 10:35 PM Author Posted January 5, 2007 at 10:35 PM I was watching the tower at EGLL and noticed that there were text messages at the bottom. I guess I wasn't hearing anything because no one was saying anything. I had read the Observers Guide when you first sent it to me but the part about the Voice Server and Channel is still confusing because I couldn't find the information anywhere. I did check every box on the screen and those I could pull up and nothing. Then again, I don't think the controllers I'm watching are on voice which would explain a lot. I'm really greatful for all your help. Thanks so much! Ryan Gamurot Lucky to live Hawai'i
Ruth McTighe 824054 Posted January 5, 2007 at 11:39 PM Posted January 5, 2007 at 11:39 PM All the EGLL controllers are on voice - they haven't got any text only controllers at present. Did you call up the controllers atis and get the details of the voice channel? Ryan Gamurot 994490 Posted January 6, 2007 at 03:45 AM Author Posted January 6, 2007 at 03:45 AM I'm very sorry, I miss read that part and thought the box in the lower right was the ATIS. Everything now works correctly. I'm sorry again and thanks so much for helping me out. Ryan Gamurot Lucky to live Hawai'i
