MSFS settings questions

Apologies in advance if this is already located somewhere and I missed it, but I am trying to look for it. I haven't really seen any faq or guides for settings to set for your various simulator, but again I may have missed it...still looking even after posting this question.

I'm very new to vatsim and trying to learn as I go and get things right and stay out of the heavy area's until I get better. But one of the struggles I'm having is trying to figure out how to get MSFS(latest version) to work correctly. For example I recently did a flight across illinois into wisconsin, and I was given a pressure of 30.55. Verified it 3 times, set it on my plane however according to ATC I was at 9000 altitude, my plane insisted I was at 10,000 which is what I was set to fly at. Now I was running at the time real world weather etc on MSFS, is that something I should turn off? I also hear on the ATC just sometimes I loadin to listen to other pilots etc, talk about cloud layers being present at certain altitudes and ATC noting there is no cloud level there.

So It makes me wonder, what settings should be set on MSFS to be as accurate as possible to everyone elses flying experiences, and ATC? Do I have to adjust my weather settings manually mid flight to be the same as ATC reports?

And question #2. When I look at vPilot which is what I use I see settings related to showing other planes and their locations etc, I assume that is so I can see other pilots on vatsim in my simulator but it doesn't appear to work at all. I can see everyone else thats playing on msfs xbox users etc, but I don't see a single vatsim which makes it a little confusing because if I get a do you see a plane at your 3 oclock 4000 ft..its like do I guess? I see it on my tablet on the vatspy so does that count? Is there some settings for that I'm missing or does that feature even work?

Hi, Thomas --

Altitude is a bit wonky right now, because MSFS allegedly uses a more realistic atmosphere model than the legacy sims.  Just a growing pain of a new sim platform and one of the fun quirks of a network that is interoperable between sims as new as MSFS2020 and as old as FS9.

Real-world (AKA "Live") weather in MSFS2020 should be close enough, for now.  There will ALWAYS, ALWAYS be variability between what weather one sim pilot sees in a given location versus another.  (EDIT: and it's not even required, necessarily, that you're operating under "Live" weather, although it's helpful if you're using something close.)  See my comment above.

If vPilot is running and you are connected, you should see other VATSIM pilots.  Typing ".aircraft" at the bottom will bring up a debugging panel you can use to help verify.  I recommend setting MSFS's native Multiplayer and AI aircraft OFF as it can definitely cause confusion like you mentioned if asked to report and/or follow traffic by a VATSIM controller.  Obviously you want to be seeing only those aircraft that other VATSIM pilots and the VATSIM ATC can see.

Thank you for the .aircraft command I was able to figure it out. Turning off all traffic, and sitting in midway just watching landings I do see the other aircraft, I was expecting the nameplates to still show in MSFS because I had all that on, but it does not show nameplates. So now that I know that I've actually turned nameplates off and learning better visually identify. Thank you for that info!
