ATC/pilot How to communicate

Hello all,

I'm pretty new to Vatsim. I have logged in as an observer sometimes just to learn.

I must admit that I have great difficulty hearing / understanding the communication between ATC and the pilots. This especially because both speak incredibly fast and indistinctly.

Is it necessary? Why not speak more slowly and clearly? Is this just a learned jargon?

It may seem fast and hard to understand at first, but you'll get used to it. Some controllers do speak too fast, but most do a pretty good job.

There is indeed "jargon", it's called "phraseology", and it's even standardized - look it up, there are tons of guides out there.

Another big part of it is anticipating: most of the time, you already have a pretty good idea of what a controller is going to say to you next. E.g., when you've just turned final and established yourself on the ILS, you would call in with tower, and the answer is usually going to be one of the following:

  • (your callsign), wind is (direction) at (speed), runway (number), cleared to land
  • (your callsign), continue approach
  • (your callsign), number (number), continue approach
  • (your callsign), expect late landing clearance (reason)

And if those are the ones you expect, you'll have a much easier time picking up what they said. The same goes for most other situations - if you've just called for taxi, the next thing you'll hear is probably a taxi clearance. If you've just switched frequencies enroute, the next thing you'll hear is "radar contact" or "identified", and possibly a further climb or descent clearance, maybe a "proceed direct". If you're with Approach, you will most likely get a couple vectors ("turn (left/right) heading (heading)", "descend (and maintain) (altitude/flight level)", "speed (airspeed)"), and then eventually "cleared ILS runway (number)". You get the idea. 95% of communications follow perfectly standard patterns, and most of what happens is at least partially predictable.

Also, keep in mind that communication is almost always going to be between the controller and one pilot, and they will generally say your callsign first, so you'll learn to just listen for your callsign and ignore everything that doesn't have it. Much easier - instead of trying to catch everything that's being said, your brain can reduce it to "*blah blah blah blah blah blah blah* **SPEEDBIRD 123, TURN LEFT HEADING 160** *blah blah blah blah blah*".

Thank you for a good and complementary answer.

I will read up on the most commonly used phrases. Clearly easier to understand what is being said when you know in advance what will be said. 🙂

Gostaria de retornar aos vôos na VATSIM.

Ja me cadastrei na GOL Linhas Aéreas virtuais

Aguardo retorno

It is much easier to help you, if you use English. Secondly from my Google translation I see that your post is not related to Stein's question. Please post your question in the relevant subforum and as your own post.

I reckon this can be useful and adequate?

For the UK that is essentially the controllers bible as to what to say and when, so if you look up a lot of the phrases you'll expect to hear then that will help!

I'd also suggest watching streamers on Twitch to see it from the perspective of an experienced person if that suits you.

That's an old version btw - can't find a sensible link that'll last throughout the ages for "whatever the current UK RT manual is" but here's the 2021 edition.

Top tip for any CAA douments: the link is just caa.co.uk/<document number>

Thus the current edition of CAP413 can always be found at https://www.caa.co.uk/cap413😉
