Going from Ground to Unicom to Ground

I had a flight today that left me a little unsure of what I should be doing. As I was leaving Manchester the ground controller there asked me to switch over to Unicom, which I did. I continued my flight, making a call at 1000'. At my destination, I only see someone online for ground. Do I just continue my flight and only check in with him as I leave the runway, or should I be calling ahead?

You would call your position and intentions on UNICOM and once vacated the runway, call ground. Ground won't control any positions above that: it's a Top-Down system!

Thanks! I figured that was the way, just felt odd that someone was there and I was sneaking up on their tiny (massive) airport.

Thank you!

I doubt you snuck up on them.  This is just a generalization, obviously -- but probably, they were watching you on their scope from about 20 miles out.  I think most S1s who work Ground at otherwise unstaffed airports are trying to gain as much experience as they can so they can start the next steps of their ATC trianing process, and are eager to talk to every plane they are able to.
