Marc Wheeler Posted May 31, 2022 at 11:35 PM Posted May 31, 2022 at 11:35 PM There are 5 national parks in Iceland and this month we visit 3 of them. Starting in Reykjavik, we depart and work our way east to find Thingvellir National Park. Thingvellir National Park is home to the iconic Gullfoss waterfall, and the Mid-Atlantic rift. From here we make a 110nm trip into the heart of the island nation to Vatnajokull National Park. Vatnajokull National Park is a protected wilderness area in south Iceland centered around Vatnajokull glacier. Defined by massive glaciers, ice caves, snowy mountain peaks, active geothermal areas, and rivers. Next, we turn south and explore Skaftafell. Skaftafell became part of Vatnajokull National Park in 2008 and is hope to Iceland’s highest peak. From there it’s a quick jump to our landing airport of Fagurholsmyri. These parks can easily be located on a map by Googling "National Parks of Iceland". A direct GPS flight between the 3 parks, will cover around 180mn. Your mission is to fly from Reykjavik (BIRK) to Fagurholsmyri (BIFM) with any Canadian Xpress freeware or payware propeller aircraft that you have the rank to fly and are rated for operations for these airports.
