Is there an updated FIR/UIR database for Vatspy as some boundaries (particularly in Australia) do not seem to correspond to actual ATC sectors.

There is, https://github.com/vatsimnetwork/vatspy-data-project. Any recent version of VAT-Spy should automatically update the local files though. Keep in mind that VAT-Spy is fairly limited in what it can and cannot display on the map in terms of sector splits.

VATSpy's database is updated once every 4 weeks (every AIRAC).

Australia regularly updates their sectors, so it should be displaying as how Australia intend them to be displayed.

Any region/VACC staff members can contribute with updated data if there is something which is out of date.

What is the actually issue with Australian sectors?

A recent update by Air Services Australia introduced a couple of new approaches positions and renamed a enroute sector, this information has been pushed to vatspy but yet to be rolled out.

Also note that if a enroute controller is extending services to an adjacent enroute sector there is no way for that extension to be visible on vatspy. If you check the controller info as required by pilots to see what sectors are being covered by thay controller.
