Michelle Ter Heide 980773 Posted January 24, 2007 at 10:00 AM Posted January 24, 2007 at 10:00 AM I am slowly starting to do some more transatlantic and domestic U.S. flights. I just have two questions. The first is about KBOS: coming from TOPPS , TAFFY or some other connection with a NAT, what would be the most appropriate way to get on a STAR. Last time I went with the PVD transition to the SCUPP3 arrival, but I am not sure whether this would be the most appropriate route. Perhaps I should just use a Direct route there instead of an airway, but well not used to any Direct routes in Europe (always use airways there in general). The second question is about KSFO, especially when without ATC, but also in case there is ATC. The FMG transition to the GOLDN4 arrival brings me to SFO, but how should I get to the ILS of rwy 28R? Just with vectors, or direct DUMBA and fly the hold to align with the runway? Michelle
Keith Smith Posted January 24, 2007 at 04:33 PM Posted January 24, 2007 at 04:33 PM Re: SFO. GOLDN4 says to expect vectors to the final approach course, if memory serves. In absence of ATC, this wouldn't be a great STAR to fly. You could fly the PYE1 arrival instead from ENI. This will take you to OSI, which is a feeder route for the ILS 28L. Ian Elchitz 810151 Posted January 24, 2007 at 10:08 PM Posted January 24, 2007 at 10:08 PM ... or for something completely different - if it is VFR conditions, fly a right downwind for 28R down the bay and make your base over the bridge. There used to be a published visual for this.. one of my favorite arrivals. Ian Elchitz Just a guy without any fancy titles
Mike Fries Posted January 25, 2007 at 11:03 PM Posted January 25, 2007 at 11:03 PM I agree with Keith that if there is no Radar Controller on for SFO and you must fly the ILS, using the PYE1 arrival would work out well. If you're set on the GOLDN4 you can follow this diagram as it is pretty much what ATC will do for you if they are online. Another option would be FMG.MOD3
Michelle Ter Heide 980773 Posted January 26, 2007 at 08:48 AM Author Posted January 26, 2007 at 08:48 AM Thanks a lot! Now I can do it myself without ATC (and due to timezones I won't have West Coast ATC often). As the chart of PYE1 showed that the SAC transition was at ATC discretion, I decided to do the RISTI4 arrival which brought me to CEDES and then straight to IAP for 28L and 28R. I just have to get away from the preferred route to KSFO, is that bad?

Paul Byrne Posted January 26, 2007 at 06:30 PM Posted January 26, 2007 at 06:30 PM Hi Michelle, From the Boston point of view, yes you are correct that you would file the SCUPP3 arrival. However, you don't have to file a transition for it. You can just file SCUPP SCUPP3 in your flightplan. This is perfectly valid and will be accepted by the controller. All you need to do then is fly a Jet airway to SCUPP if flying in over the ocean, or if you find yourself flying down the coastline towards Boston, you can use ENE SCUPP SCUPP3 in your plan. Hope this helps. Cheers! Paul.
Michelle Ter Heide 980773 Posted January 26, 2007 at 06:58 PM Author Posted January 26, 2007 at 06:58 PM @Mike: Most of the times I will be getting there from Boston/Newark/Chicago. @Paul: Thanks for the info. Most of the times getting from over the ocean, I'll be flying down the coastline from the north, so I can do ENE SCUPP SCUPP3. Otherwise I should just find the J575 to SCUPP, it seems. Thanks really much, getting to learn to fly to the US
