It depends on whether you filed an IFR or VFR flight plan and the phraseology is slightly different between FAA and EASA, and also between European countries, for VFR flights. Below are some examples of how the conversation goes in Europe, more or less.

For an IFR flight plan, you wouldn't typically get the "pass your message":

  • Radar, BIGJET 1234, FL 280, inbound WAYPNT
  • BIGJET 1234, identified

For a VFR flight plan, it depends on what you want. Three notable situations:

  1. Flight information
  2. Transit control zone
  3. Landing

For flight information:

  • Information, F-ABCD
  • F-ABCD, Information, pass your message
  • F-ABCD, Cessna 172, VFR from Origin to Destination, 15 miles south of Somewhere, 2500 feet, SomewhereElse 25

"25" is the estimated time of arrival, as in 16:25.

For transit:

  • Radar, F-ABCD
  • F-ABCD, Radar, pass your message
  • F-ABCD, Cessna 172, VFR from Origin to Destination, 2500 feet. ReportingPoint 25. Request cross CTR from ReportingPointA to ReportingPointB
  • F-CD, squack 4321

For landing

  • Approach, F-ABCD
  • F-ABCD, Approach pass your message
  • F-ABCD, Cessna 172, VFR from Origin, 15 miles south of control zone boundary, for landing at Destination, with Golf

And the more basic answer: file an IFR plan, and the only things you say, other than reading back what you hear are :

  • Delivery, Lufthansa 1234, stand A123, information Golf, request clearance IFR to Destination
  • Ground, Lufthansa 1234, request push and start
  • Ground Lufthansa 1234, request taxi
  • Tower, Lufthansa 1234, short of 08R, ready for departure
  • Approach, Lufthansa 1234, passing 4000 feet, climbing FL70
  • Radar, Lufthansa 1234, FL280, inbound waypoint
  • Approach, Lufthansa 1234, passing FL130, descending FL100
  • Tower, Lufthansa 1234, 8 miles final, 08R
  • Ground, Lufthansa 1234, vacated on A12
  • Ground, Lufthansa 1234, on the blocks, thank you, good day
