Kirk Royster Posted August 21, 2022 at 10:09 PM Posted August 21, 2022 at 10:09 PM (edited) Is there any "acceptable" means of observing VATSIM flights (visually - like what you would see from a camera associated with an aircraft) at a location (airport)? I can see various benefits from this (could further "grow the pond"), but it seems that "parking online" with a camera watching flights is not the acceptable method. My assumption is that there is not currently a solution for this, but I think that such would be of great interest if something like web cams were set up and offered by VATSIM. You can test it, it's for free. swift project (swift-project.org) If you need any help join the x-plane room of Discord.
Kirk Royster Posted August 31, 2022 at 03:25 AM Author Posted August 31, 2022 at 03:25 AM I see that you can view any aircraft in the list with a follow distance, but I do not see anything that would be like a camera set at a position at an airport to view live ATC flights moving within range of the camera based on its position. ? Claude ROULLIER Posted August 31, 2022 at 09:22 AM Posted August 31, 2022 at 09:22 AM Hi Kirk, There is a feature named Towerview: tower_view_controllers_euroscope_vstars [swift Documentation] (swift-project.org) but it is done for the controlers. The result: The complete and operational realworld Tower Simulator at SABE, using swift. - Swift Project Support - X-Plane.Org Forum
Torben Andersen Posted August 31, 2022 at 04:42 PM Posted August 31, 2022 at 04:42 PM I don't think logging on at a gate will raise many eyebrows on the controllerside/supervisor. Rather have you learning the procedures/lingo this way, than having you wandering around the skies causing havoc. I did not expect Euroscope to be used in real world training simulators. (Although the picture on the ES website... might be from one too?) Kirk Royster Posted August 31, 2022 at 08:55 PM Author Posted August 31, 2022 at 08:55 PM Thanks for this reference. Appears that Euroscope is a Windows based application (e.g. not Mac capable). The word I get from the VATSIM community is that an occasional Connect and View session (e.g. use of a connection for "observing" the airport environment and using the session to increase familiarity with ATC communication protocol/jargon would not be frowned upon (considering the alternative in the air in some cases). Camera applications can aide with placement of the "view." I may give this a try, preferably during an event where there is a lot going on.
