Jim Albertson 812206 Posted March 11, 2007 at 06:18 PM Posted March 11, 2007 at 06:18 PM Hello everyone Considering how skilled, realistic, and extremely professional everyone at the Memphis ARTCC is, I was thinking (it only hurt for a minute or two ) how about letting others experience the most realistic ATC through a fly-in. I believe it would help generate more traffic after the event would take place. I know others would be impressed just as much as I was when I first flew into their airspace. What I thought about was the first time I went to Memphis. I flew in around 1500Lcl time, and met a friend who was training to fly a CRJ with Northwest Airlink. It seemed like we were the only guys flying in MEM airspace. My friend (co-pilot -just a BE-76) and I left around 2000Lcl, and my goodness what a MADHOUSE . We were #4 for take-off behind a Fed-Ex MD-11 (2), Fed-Ex 727, and a Fed-Ex C-208. When we were cleared for take off on 18C we were hold 18L (coming from Signature). We had to sneak out in front of a 747 on 4 mile final. After that experience, we told all the guys at the flight school, and from that day forward we have always referred to 2000 as Fed-Ex Rush hour . So, if it might be at all possible... perhaps a fly-in called "Fed-Ex Rush Hour" could be organized? Many pilots could experience not only the rush of being cleared for the app., while 3rd in line, but also it could help gain exposure to the wonderful ATC experience that ZME Provides. I'm just a lone pilot (No VA affiliation), and not an ATC for ZME. If the idea is feasible, I would be willing to help in any way that I can. By the way, special thanks to Mr. Robert and Mr. Alan for the Fantastic ATC yesterday. You guys are good at making me forget that I'm sitting behind a computer screen and not a Yoke Have a wonderful day, Bob
Stephen Keskitalo 977981 Posted March 11, 2007 at 07:43 PM Posted March 11, 2007 at 07:43 PM That's a good suggestion. Robert Ogden 985378 Posted March 11, 2007 at 07:59 PM Posted March 11, 2007 at 07:59 PM Hey Bob! Thanks for the continued support. I'll p[Mod - Happy Thoughts] your idea on to our Event Director, Jared. One of the problems we have at ZME is that the airlines that have hubs in our airspace in the RW are barely alive in the VATSIM world. I'm not even sure Northwest even exists on VATSIM (haven't seen one in a while). FedEx flights (whose world HQ is in Memphis) we see fairly often, but not as a result of a vibrant VA but rather as a result of 'lone' pilots using the callsigns. Thats why we work so hard at realism and making an immersing experience in ZME. We aren't the kind of airspace that will get a whole lot of traffic regardless of how pathetic our controlling is because some huge hub is in our airspace. Our traffic volume is directly related to our service, so its music to our ears to hear that it is appreciated.
Mark J Angstadt 814878 Posted March 12, 2007 at 05:08 AM Posted March 12, 2007 at 05:08 AM Bob, I'm in the proccess of looking to have an event like your idea suggests, there is one Fed Ex VA that is on VATSIM, however, their site is down at the moment, there is also a UPS VA that we might be able to go after even though they are not based in any of ZME's airports. Thanks again for your support and ideas, keep them coming!!! Mark J Angstadt ZME Events Director
Jim Albertson 812206 Posted March 14, 2007 at 02:59 AM Author Posted March 14, 2007 at 02:59 AM Hi Mark, I am not sure of all of the VAs out there, but if a DHL VA exists then they could be another to contact. I am not one to give praise for the sake of hearing myself talk . I honestly feel that the quality of ATC services provided by you guys is something that pilots are missing out on. I know a lot of people like to fly to the usual busy areas, but if they only knew..... Memphis would be just as busy as LAX on a Sat. night. I have some other ideas, but I need to scoot right now. I'll try and sneak in a post before I head to the airport tomorrow morning. Bob
Mark J Angstadt 814878 Posted March 15, 2007 at 02:58 AM Posted March 15, 2007 at 02:58 AM Alright can't wait to here them, and I stand corrected UPS VA is based out of KMEM, however, they only have a few flights a day in and out. Glenn Blanco 852844 Posted March 16, 2007 at 08:43 AM Posted March 16, 2007 at 08:43 AM you won't see any NWA or FedEx VAs in VATSIM as the real airlines didn't want their brands used. However, you will still see individuals fly using those colors and I don't think they pose any threat to the real airline.
