Being a "Zibo pilot" myself, I am wondering what is special about it and why people from the other network are extremely hyped. I mean, tools like SWIFT - my favourite pilot client - can simulate SELCAL, too. Why does it need a special integration?

Probably yes or they are just late. I asked that question one of the Zibomod admins and I don't see any differences to what we've done on VATSIM (for years ?!). SWIFT can even convert the four-letter code into four designated audio tones since the beginning.

It’s good that IVAO is progressing as well on the development front. We might have had it «first», but the constant development «race» between VATSIM and IVAO is pointless, apart from putting a bit of pressure on each other to push updates to our users. 🙂 This is a built in SELCAL into the Zibo mod, which VATSIM doesn’t have yet. Good for them!

I see differently. No competition, no progress. Perfect example would be AMD vs. Intel, but that's another topic.

From users' view point of view, I simply do not understand the hype and what the advantage is of having the SELCAL feature built-in in the Zibomod instead of in SWIFT.

....or any other pilot client. Maybe IVAO's network protocol supports SELCAL specifically?

I know that VPILOT does not simulate the four designated SELCAL letter sound, but SWIFT does. However, wouldn't it make sense to leave the SELCAL feature in the pilot client like what we already have today so that everybody can use SELCAL independently from the aircraft he actually flies. If I am not mistaken from watching their presentation video, only Zibomod users/pilots can use SELCAL on IVAO while other people (who use a PMDG or FSLabs aircraft for example) are left behind.

The SELCAL letter sound is nice, of course. As long as the receiver gets a SELCAL-ping, that's already great. In the real world we usually do not hear the SELCAL letter sound, because we normally turn down the volume of our HF-radios enroute.

So, you get a message somewhere on your displays like CPDLC? Or how do you get notified that you was "pinged" by ATC?

If this is the case, then it is indeed really something revolutionary and new which we have seen on any online flying networks before.

That's the trick of SELCAL: it works independent from the frequencies that you are tuned to, ATC can always reach you.

This is a recording from one of my own crossings. We would have received the notification (sound+screen message) even with the HF volume being turned down all the way.

Oh wow. After almost 10 years on VATSIM there are still things to be discovered. I really didn't know that you will get an on-display message like CPDLC etc. I have thought that the SELCAL sound is the only notification which you will receive. Now everything make sense to me.

Thanks for bringing some lights inti the dark. That video really helps
