ALISTAIR SIMMONS 1002119 Posted March 18, 2007 at 07:32 PM Posted March 18, 2007 at 07:32 PM Apologies if this is an easy one, but where can I find UK VFR charts online, free to download?. I have checked through the VATSIM UK charts page, and searched via Google etc, but without any luck so far. I am hoping that someone might be able to point me in the right direction and save me some time...so that I have more time to learn more about VATSIM....having only completed flight No.1 this weekend! Any help is appreciated.
Ruth McTighe 824054 Posted March 19, 2007 at 12:09 AM Posted March 19, 2007 at 12:09 AM You can't I'm afraid - they aren't published in electronic format. They cost about £13 each new - you only need two at the half-mil scale to cover England and Wales. If you ask nicely on the VATSIM-UK forum, one of our realworld pilots may be able to let you have out-of-date but recent charts. NI is on the same chart as Northern England. Perosnally I prefer the quarter mil charts, but you need more to cover the whole country, which makes it more expensive. Scott Smith 921136 Posted March 19, 2007 at 12:41 AM Posted March 19, 2007 at 12:41 AM Lol, no problem. For us Prestwick Pilots we have a problem... We can buy the Scottish charts, which borders Prestwick, or we can buy the English charts that don't cover northern scotland! You can never win in aviation Unless you buy 1:250 000 lol

I'll buy a couple online, but wanted to check that there was nowhere free to download first. Watch out for more basic questions from me here soon! Thanks, Alistair. Francis Shepherd 980238 Posted March 25, 2007 at 02:18 PM Posted March 25, 2007 at 02:18 PM I think it would be ridiculous trying to print a 1:500000 chart on A4, you would need a very good printer and a good magnifying gl[Mod - Happy Thoughts]. I am starting my PPL very soon, as soon as I'm 14 (which is tomorrow at the time of writing) so I am going to get both a 1:500,000 and a 1:250,000 chart I think, amongst a flight computer and slide rule, stopwatch, stopwatch clip for my kneeboard, chinograph pencils, PPL books and logbook. Don't rush out and get them all, you should ask your instructor at the time what you require for the lessons. My flying club don't use 1:500,000 charts (for example)
