Nate Johns Posted June 3, 2007 at 01:39 AM Posted June 3, 2007 at 01:39 AM Under 31? US Citizen? Love ATC? There are ever more openings for off the street ATC hires around the nation as the FAA's imposed work rules and 30% salary cuts are causing excessive retirements and many CTI applicants to turn down a formerly lucrative career. I love the job, but the politics plain suck right now. Anyone considering applying should do their due diligence in researching the career and the current situation with pay and work environment between NATCA and the FAA prior to applying. Matthew Horan 901577 Posted June 3, 2007 at 02:52 AM Posted June 3, 2007 at 02:52 AM I find it interesting how the process varies so drastically between Canada and the USA when it comes to this -- up here, you apply to Navcanada, and upon being accepted, train with them, before being posted to an ACC or Tower. Nate Johns Posted June 3, 2007 at 03:00 AM Author Posted June 3, 2007 at 03:00 AM I guess it might vary a little. Here, you know where you're going before you begin training at the FAA academy. Otherwise, the process is the same though. Apply. Get selected for a facility. Train at FAA Academy in OKC. Go to facility. ~Nate Nate Johns "All things are difficult before they are easy." - Dr. Thomas Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732

Nate Johns Posted June 4, 2007 at 12:20 AM Author Posted June 4, 2007 at 12:20 AM No offense of couse to any Silver State ATC students, but SS (and some other CTI schools) seems to force their students to unnecessarily spend thousands of dollars on a PPL. Sure, it helps understand the pilot's side a little, but it's not necessary for ATC. That's $5000-$6000 in unnecessary expenses right there, bare minimum. Save that money before going to OKC for tower training and you can have a little more peace of mind living on the small wages. This, of course, isn't to mention the other many thousands of dollars in tuition and living expenses that will take many years to pay off as opposed to hiring directly in to the FAA. At the rate the FAA is going to be hiring over the next few years, one could be hired, sent to a terminal facility, and possibly be checked out before they would be able to complete a 2 year program and still have to wait for the FAA bureaucracy to get them hired and sent to a facility. That, and a straight CTO doesn't do much for those that end up going to a Center or TRACON only facility. They still gotta learn radar. ~Nate Nate Johns "All things are difficult before they are easy." - Dr. Thomas Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732
