Using Two Computers and Wide FS

When using VATSIM/SB3 with FS9 on one computer and SB3 on a second networked system, do I require separate internet connections on both systems?

At present, it appears so; with the internet connection on the SB3 system, I can connect to VATSIM but am asked to set up an FS9 multiplayer connection manually. With the internet connection on the FS9 system, although SB3 obviously sees FS9, it cannot connect.

V grateful for help from someone with experience of this set up.

Many thanks

If you hae an internet connection, and a network connection between the two computers, then both computers have an internet connection, that is not an issue.

What SB3 is saying, is that it was not able to trigger a multiplayer connection in FS9. You can do this manually by selecting File|Multiplayer|Connect. Use the JOIN option rather than HOST.

If you can't do this, then you have a problem with your FSWide-FS9 connection.

Orest,

Thanks - after hours of research, my problem is that I cannot enable internet sharing [iCS] between the two computers. The original LAN that I set up without ICS seems to be blocking things. Whenever I try to select ICS, I receive the error message:

"ICS cannot be enabled. A LAN Connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing"

When I try using the Network wizard - I receive an error message asking me to contact my network administrator.

I looked at deleting the original LAN and starting again but could find no way of doing that.

I have also searched the net and other than suggestions to set manual IP addresses on the LAN - which does not work - I have been unable to resolve things.

V grateful if you have any other suggestions.

Many thanks

I'm not a network guru in any way shape or form but, your first post sounds like your trying to open to connections to VATSIM on two PC's with only one PID.

1) the VATSIM rule's are quite clear, that is not allowed

2) the VATSIM software will not allow two connections from one PID.

3) only one PID per pilot.

Theoretically you should only need to open one connection to VATSIM and if you PC's are on the same network and you have WideFS setup correctly you will share the one connection over the two PC's. As I say I'm not a network guy but that sounds logical to me. Can i suggest you look in the PRC.

Also after reading your post again, I can't quite understand why your asked to setup a multiplayer session when it should be an automatic process. I'm figuring your pretty new to all this as you have only got two posts in the forum, but I'm sure someone will comealong with the correct answer.

At the moment your just wasting that second internet connection. The other thing is why two PC's what exactly are you trying to do?

I have two internet connections myself one drives my Flight Sim/ATC PC which has two monitors and the other connection drives my Laptop which will commonly have vroute and the world wide web running on it.

I'm sure there will be some help in that docomeent.

Do i understand right, do you have one PC-1 with internet, and a second PC-2 connected to PC-1 sharing the internet ?

Then i guess PC-1 have two network adapters.

Some inputs:

Only the SB3 PC are required to have access to internet.

Both PC must have a network connection.

If possible, I suggest you use static IP-adress and first to try "ping" each PC. Note down each PC IP-address. If you anyway want use dynamic IP, look [Mod - Happy Thoughts]igned IP-address and note down.

Windows Startbutton -> Run -> cmd (a black text window should open)

Then type (example): ping 192.168.0.4

You will see if basic connection to next PC is available.

I think you must setup WideFS IP-address by hand.

If you have a more complex LAN network or even two separate internet connections or as in your case one IP-address maybe is not local, WideFS still are usable, but requires to setup address by hand,. WideFS client automatically search for the FS-computer only at default LAN home-network 192.168.0.XXX (i.e. 255 address search).

If it doesnt work even but WideFS are correct setup, you may have a firewall somewhere required to open ports. Both WideFS and FS-Multiplayer must communicate between the PC's , but you see indication first if WideFS client are connected or not.

I presume you have installed WideFS also in the FS-computer.

WideFS has a forum http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html The WideFS creator him self give good support.

Edit: For above reply, i do not think hi try make two connections to VATSIM, but just to use WideFS as indended for two computers

Wycliffe & Lennart

Very many thanks for your help. As you realise, I am new to VATSIM [after 10+ years using FS]. I have no problem using SB3/VATSIM on one PC and have been flying this afternoon. However, the PRC does confirm that SB3 can be used on a second PC through Wide FS - VATSIM still sees just one connection - and this is my preferred option as I already use FSC; FDC; AI Smooth etc etc on my support PC. I can see the outputs on this PC's monitor leaving the main PC to concentrate on FS and giving me an uncluttered FS display. In this configuration, both PC must access the internet - one for SB3 and one for FS9.

However, I am now sure that the problem is nothing to do with SB3 or VATSIM. It is a Windows problem - I suspect caused because, when I first enabled my LAN, I set it up specifically without an internet connection. Setting up Internet Connection Sharing [iCS] is relatively straightforward in XP but unfortunately it conflicts with my original LAN settings; hence the errors.

I have tried other specialist forums with no success. There seems no easy way to resolve this other than re-installing XP on two computers - and that can wait until I really have to!

Fall back is a second wireless adaptor so that both PC can access the internet - again VATSIM will only have one connection against my ID.

Again, many thanks for coming to help - I try some more searching on the networking forums.
