Martin Tait 908838 Posted March 4, 2005 at 03:18 PM Posted March 4, 2005 at 03:18 PM Good Afternoon, i was at KLAX (Los Angeles Intl) a few nights ago, preparing to contact the ATC for my departure and i noticed there was a B747 parked at the gate next to me. the B747 appeared half way above the ground and half underneath , why did this happen every other aircraft looks normal. the only thing i could put it down to was, i am using MSFS2004 and i am guessing he/she was using X-Plane also, when they were taxiing it was if there runways, taxiways were in a different place to any thoughts? Norman Blackburn Posted March 4, 2005 at 03:43 PM Posted March 4, 2005 at 03:43 PM Chances are since it was a 747 what you saw was PS1.3, a sim dedicated only to the 747-400. Check out their site @ www.aerowinx.de Priced at GBP 169.95 from RCSims in the UK or you could take advantage buying from the USA @ $259.95 Norman

Keith Smith Posted March 29, 2005 at 04:21 PM Posted March 29, 2005 at 04:21 PM 1) MSFS and Xplane report their altitudes relative to different points on the aircraft 2) the airplane may not have been a 747. The mappings in xsquawkbox don't cover all aircraft, and if memory serves, it falls back to the 747. 3) the taxiway layouts aren't 100% accurate for all airports...but they're getting better over time. Keith Keith's answer is pretty accurate. There's a few issues causing this but the main two are as follows... 1) XSB determines the aircraft's position (elevation) based on its center of gravity. This may vary in from sim to sim. So if FS2004 uses a different reference point, then the aircraft will appear above/below the ground. 2) The second issue is model matching. If the real user was flying an A340 for example and you didn't have a multiplayer model of an A340 to draw, XSB might pick a B747 as the closest match. But the height from the Center of Gravity to the ground between the A340 and B747 may be different. These two issues combined account for most of the error. Ethan Stein 890841 Posted May 10, 2005 at 04:15 PM Posted May 10, 2005 at 04:15 PM Will XSB ever be able to display the livery of the aircraft? Just wondering, I'm starting to understand how all this works and it seems it would be very difficult. Yet SB3 does it outstanding for MSFS as I hear, so I was just wondering how much different it would be.
