Neil Dewson-Smyth 813906 Posted December 3, 2004 at 12:43 PM Posted December 3, 2004 at 12:43 PM VATSIM-UK recently ran a basic training night for pilots needing [Mod - Happy Thoughts]istance in getting connected to the network. The VATSIM-UK Teamspeak server was utilised to gain voice communication whilst problems people were having getting connected were ironded out. Below is my response to the success of the evening on the VATSIM-UK forum. Well it seems this evenings session was a success. Many thanks to all those who [Mod - Happy Thoughts]isted in anyway at all. These sessions are planned to be held once a month, normally on the first Wednesday. So the next basic training night will be Wednesday 5th January 2005. However, TS is running 24hrs a day 7 days a week and you will often find somebody within who may be able to help you. There is also this forum of course! Also, if you are able to connect to VATSIM already but still need a little help or advice. Keep an eye out for VATSIM-UK staff, SUP's or INS who may be logged in with a .hlp suffix. HLP being "help". This is a new trial and very much in its infancy.. but if you see hlp and need a bit of advice.. switch to their frequency and you should be able to get some [Mod - Happy Thoughts]istance. The main thread in the UK can be viewed here http://www.vatsim-uk.org/forum/index.php?topic=3127.0 I will post more information about the next training night nearer the time. Gary Bendle 879910 Posted December 6, 2004 at 10:39 PM Posted December 6, 2004 at 10:39 PM I've been a decidedly inactive member of Vatsim for some time but want to get started. I've flown the hops through MSN Zone but it lacks realism, so... what do I need to bring to the first flight on 5th Jan? I wish I had night vision goggles for evening flights! Neil Dewson-Smyth 813906 Posted December 7, 2004 at 12:35 PM Author Posted December 7, 2004 at 12:35 PM Hi Gary If you've never flown VATSIM before then you will need some software. This is all free and can be obtained from www.vatsim.net From the left pane on the home page select pilot resources and then pilot software. If you don't have Teamspeak then use the link in the first post on this thread and visit the main VATSIM-UK forum. There you will find links for Teamspeak. Follow the simple instructions to get connected and then join TS. Once registered in TS you will be able to chat with the members able to help you on the night. However, there is a goodly time between now and the 5th and there is no reason why you cannot be connected and flying on VATSIM well in advance of this! Give the software a try and if you have any problems or questions, drop into the VATSIM-UK teamspeak or post on our main forum and I am confident you will get any issues sorted out quickly. Good luck and see you online! Neil Dewson-Smyth VATSIM Europe RCRP Lead vatsim[at]d-s.demon.co.uk

Gary Bendle 879910 Posted February 2, 2005 at 09:54 PM Posted February 2, 2005 at 09:54 PM I joined in the flights tonight and it was a breeze. The EGNH Controller was superb, so thanks to him. It was much less hectic than jumping into the fun at EGCC! I wish I had night vision goggles for evening flights!
Ruth McTighe 824054 Posted February 2, 2005 at 10:15 PM Posted February 2, 2005 at 10:15 PM Glad you enjoyed it, Gary. Adrian Smith, who was tonight's EGNH_APP, is actually a real world EGNH Tower controller, so you got it "as real as it gets" tonight!
