Harvey Morgan 1017759 Posted September 9, 2007 at 03:29 AM Posted September 9, 2007 at 03:29 AM I am having some difficulty staying connected to the air traffic control server for longer than one to two minutes. I understand that it is suggested that you do not leave your microphone or computer unattended when connected for more than 30 minutes and I can understand this. I have no difficulty getting connected to the ATC server and usually an able to communicate by way of microphone once or twice, but I invariably get disconnected and usually less than one or two minutes. I think it is most likely due to my Internet connection however it is broadband and seems to be working normally with all of my other Internet connections. So far I have never actually flown online though I have read all the suggested material. When I log on and connect I send my flight plan and then I tuned my radio to the air traffic controllers frequency and am able to hear conversations which is all that I intend to do at this point because I am just trying to get familiar with the air traffic control protocol. Am I supposed to announce my presence on the frequency since all I want to do is listen at this point. If I need to do something other than nothing to stay connected, please tell me. I have even disabled both Microsoft and McAfee firewall's thinking that perhaps they were causing the problem but it continues to happen Is this a common problem for other pilots and if so what do you suspect my problem is? I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks, Harvey Morgan and Savannah Georgia.

Harvey Morgan 1017759 Posted October 22, 2007 at 01:15 PM Author Posted October 22, 2007 at 01:15 PM I posted my initial question about this problem several weeks ago but apparently with only one response, no one else was having this problem. I eventually had a technician come to my home from the broadband cable company and was told that my signal to my house was strong and had no problem. My modem seemed to be working properly except for these frequent disconnects except for the fact that downloading was slower than when I first signed on with this company and I suspected they had overloaded the line in my neighborhood. I elected to buy a new modem and purchased the Motorola surfboard model SB 5101. Since installing this new modem I have not had the first disconnect and my Internet speed is much faster. Sorry if this or a similar post has already been made, but I thought I would offer this solution that works so well for me in case other sim--pilots could be having this problem.
