Jim Thompson 860791 Posted October 20, 2007 at 07:35 PM Posted October 20, 2007 at 07:35 PM I wrote to the support guys twice and never got an answer, other than upgrade WinZip (I use WinRAR Corporate). I switched to a new, clean HD and new XP Pro installation. Been trying to install X-Plane 8 from my DVD, which I would subsequently up to 8.6. My old install (no longer on C drive) won't load since I switched ATI back to nVidia card. Here is the error I get upon install today. Any advice is appreciated. Wayne Conrad 989233 Posted October 21, 2007 at 01:23 PM Posted October 21, 2007 at 01:23 PM Jim, To make sure this isn't an unreadable DVD: Are you able to copy the DVD to some temporary location on your hard drive? Jim Thompson 860791 Posted October 21, 2007 at 05:52 PM Author Posted October 21, 2007 at 05:52 PM Ah ha... don't we always overlook the obvious. Thanks Wayne. That was it. I wonder if they will send a replacement disk. Isn't all the basic code in the online installer? Since I already have a "license" on my computer already, shouldn't I be able to just install the 8.6 from their site without needing a DVD? The scenery DVD appears to be fine. Ian Elchitz 810151 Posted October 24, 2007 at 06:02 PM Posted October 24, 2007 at 06:02 PM Jimbo - interested to hear how the support/resolution went. My only experience with XP support was excellent. Ian. Ian Elchitz Just a guy without any fancy titles
Jim Thompson 860791 Posted October 25, 2007 at 02:19 AM Author Posted October 25, 2007 at 02:19 AM Well they didnt really respond to my first two requests AT ALL! Really weird. Ian, any thoughts on whether I can just install whats on their website but use my scenery DVD for the full thing? Ian Elchitz 810151 Posted October 25, 2007 at 08:19 AM Posted October 25, 2007 at 08:19 AM I think that should work fine. I'd get a new CD in any event and backup a copy too while you are at it. Just an FYI - I recently rebuilt my computer. Before taking the HDD offline I copied the XPLANE directory to a different backup partition. After reloading windows - all I did was launch X-Plane from the new location and everything worked great. So apparently - it doesn't do ANY sort of registry or other lazy stuff. All nicely self contained the way software ought to be. Ian Elchitz Just a guy without any fancy titles
Keith Smith Posted October 25, 2007 at 01:51 PM Posted October 25, 2007 at 01:51 PM Jim, The error does seem so simple now that we see the solution. Sorry I didn't pick that up in our earlier convos. Regarding your old install, if it's still around, try deleting the preferences files (xplane/resources/preferences/*.prf) and fire it up with the DVD in the drive? Jim Thompson 860791 Posted November 1, 2007 at 06:08 AM Author Posted November 1, 2007 at 06:08 AM I guess I somehow deleted the old install - I could have sworn I kept it. Argh. Well X-Plane wants $20 for a new DVD or something like $79 to pre-order V9. I think I will look for a BT file in the meantime just to get back up and running on 8.6.
