Is there a way to monitor "voice" when viewing ServInfo? I'd like to be able to monitor the active centers, etc. and their freqs are shown. Any suggestions? Thanks.

no there is not.. the only way to do that is by starting up FS and connecting to an airport and tuning your radio to a active ATC. please remember to sit at a gate

Would teamspeak be able to connect without using VRC or FS? I never tried it.

no, if you open the ATC atis in SI you notice a "this line is hidden by the controller" that is the voice server they are using... this is to prevent people from going the channel and being ATC without the use of VRC or other ATC programs

Well, not the only way, you can connect using the ATC software as well...

Bit of confusion. A couple of years ago VATSIM used roger wilco for voice comms. Servinfo had a function (still exists but no longer works for reasons explained below) where you could click on the controller and listen in to the freq (the button would open up your version of roger wilco and tune it to the voice channel.

Problem was anyone anywhere could tune into a voice room and disrupt voice comms on VATSIM and it was tough to catch them or do anything because they didn't have to login to the network.

Roger Wilco was ultimately replaced by the VATSIM voice client (which used a better technique for packaging the voice data). This client (called AVC) required you to be logged in to the VATSIM network in order to connect up.

AVC went the way of the do-do bird when SB3 and FSINN were released because they had integrated voice comms as part of their software. Obviously this integration meant (by definition) that you had to be logged into the network. This is was a conscious decision on the part of VATSIM as it would eliminate (or at least greatly reduce) all the voice disruptors out there. Those who were here in the days of Roger Wilco remember the absolute pain when one of these idiots started disrupting things.

So in short:

1. The Servinfo "listen in" link no longer works because it is tied to roger wilco.

2. With the new integrated voice clients, you MUST be logged into the network in order to listen in to any freqs. This is by design.

3. Teamspeak has never been used for plane-to-ground ATC comms on VATSIM, there are no plans to use it in the future. It is a totally different protocol and does Not interface with teh Vatsim Voice Client system.

Hope this helps!

Dave
