Vatsim intend to make online flying close to real, include real procedures and trained real people at ATC . You speak with those ATC people using voice. You can also use text to communicate with ATC or with other pilots. All basic software to fly on Vatsim are availabe at http://www.vatsim.net/ -> Pilot Resources -> Pilot Software -> "Complete VATSIM Software Package for Microsoft Flight Simulator. Convenient one download package for Microsoft Flight Simulator pilots. ". All software docomeent are included. With this you can connect and to get technically ready for Vatsim. Adding: The application "AVC Tuner" is NOT included, 'cause it's a separate option. But many (if not all) pilots use it. You can read and try it later in addition. I understand it it confusing. There is NO Squawkbox created for FS2004 no matter what you read.. But no problem you can use Squawkbox with FS2004. The application SBRelay fix the compability for FS2004. The important is, in the pdf docomeent in the link above, you should find the pdf-file with title "Squawkbox for FS2004", that docomeent describe how you should use SBRelay and Squawkbox togeter for FS2004.
