Norman Blackburn Posted November 29, 2007 at 08:09 AM Posted November 29, 2007 at 08:09 AM Kevin, Welcome to VATSIM. You can't download Microsoft Flight Simulator (or indeed any simulator to use on VATSIM) - it is a commercial product you need to walk into a store and buy off the shelf. Once you have it installed then you can freely download the VATSIM bits - you mention squawkbox which can be downloaded from www.squawkbox.ca - it has it's own installer which will automatically detect where FS was installed; it couldn't be easier. Once you have got to this stage I would recommend reading the Pilot Resource Centre if you have not already done so. It should answers most of your questions. That said, if you have any questions you feel it doesn't answer, and remember there are no stupid questions, come straight back and ask! Bill Casey Posted November 29, 2007 at 08:10 AM Posted November 29, 2007 at 08:10 AM Best advice is to first of all buy Flight Simulator (there is no current download version, it's just too big) and then follow its built-in flying lessons before even thinking of connecting to Vatsim. One of the requirements of flying on Vatsim is being able to confidently handle your aircraft e.g. being able to fly and maintain a heading at a constant altitude; climb and descend smoothly; turn the aircraft without losing/gaining height; be able to operate the radios etc. Vatsim is not the place to learn these basic skills and you really should master them offline first of all with the FS lessons being a good starting point for the beginner. While you're doing that you can also be reading the Pilots Resource Centre on here which will give you all the information you need ready for when you're flying well enough to make that first online flight! It is a wonderful hobby but one that does require the pilot to work at it and that doesn't just happen overnight, believe me though the effort you need to put in is hugely rewarded each time you succesfully achieve something you've not done before. Most people on here will tell you that you learn something new almost every day however long you've been at this lark and that is one of the things that makes it such a brillaintly addictive hobby which many have now succesfully turned into careers in real-world aviation. Some sayings from the aviaton world that provide amazing guidance when learning to fly... "All take-offs are voluntary but landings are compulsory" "When flying try to stay on the middle of the sky" "There is nothing less useful than the sky above you or the runway behind you" "Aircraft always carry enough fuel to reach the scene of the crash" Good luck - it's brilliant Bill Casey

Please make a reference to the parts of the breakdown you have a problem with. We'll be glad to help clarify the parts that are confusing to you. -- L. James -- L. D.
