John Speranza 908835 Posted April 17, 2005 at 08:29 PM Posted April 17, 2005 at 08:29 PM Hey Guys, I am wondering, who 'officially' has control over Bermuda Airspace? I know that It is in ZNY Oceanic, but also Bermuda has an Approach sector. In addition, to make this even more confusing, since Bermuda is technically British Airspace, does it fall under VATUK, for being british, or VATUSA, for being in ZNY (I know oceanic centers dont mean much though). Any Clarification would be helpful. John Speranza Note, the same message will be asked of VATUK...
Kiel McGowan 813486 Posted April 17, 2005 at 11:37 PM Posted April 17, 2005 at 11:37 PM That would be VATCAR airspace....Caribbean has their own region.
Brian Hoyle Posted April 18, 2005 at 01:26 AM Posted April 18, 2005 at 01:26 AM John, Bermuda lies within ZNY area F, sectors 80 and 81, both are radar, within 180 mile radius of the island. If you look at charts, all app/dep services are NY Center. To quote a real ZNY SOP which I used to work from ... Sector 80 (COCOA). Sector 80 is a low altitude sector with no predominant flow. It provides approach control service for traffic arriving and departing Bermuda. Sector 81 (HILDY). Sector 81 is both a high and a low altitude oceanic radar sector with no predominant flow. This sector transitions aircraft to/from sector 80 for traffic arriving and departing Bermuda; establishes non radar separation for traffic entering WATRS (West Atlantic Route System) and MNPS (Minimum Navigation Performance Standards) airspace; and issues oceanic clearances on VHF for flights not on ATS routes. Sector 80 (COCOA) ... 1. Radar Controller a. Apply Enroute and Terminal procedures as described in FAA Order 7110.65 b. Apply non-radar procedures as described in FAA Order 7110.65 c. Coordinate all arrival aircraft with Bermuda tower as per the New York Center / Bermuda Tower Letter of Agreement. ... Sector 81 (HILDY) ... 1. Radar Controller a. Ensure Bermuda departing traffic entering New York oceanic airspace has received a full route clearance prior to FIR/CTA boundary, except WATRS traffic on ATS routes. b. Issue routing to first fix outside New York's airspace on all westbound flights. c. Apply Enroute procedures as described in FAA Order 7110.65 d. Apply non-radar procedures as described in FAA Order 7110.65 e. P[Mod - Happy Thoughts] the boundary fix estimates to adjacent non-radar sectors. Revisions of three minutes or more shall be forwarded as per the 7110.65. There will no requirement to p[Mod - Happy Thoughts] next fix estimates unless the D87 or D89 controller requests them. ... As for the Tower itself, I only had information from a one-time NY controller who lived on the island, and honestly couldn't tell you if it operated using FAA or CAA rules. It would seem dumb to have the app facility give you the altimeter after receiving the ATIS in QNH, but who knows, we are talking government here So, if the Brits wanted to [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ume responsibility of the Tower facility then I would suggest talking to Karl Kleiber the current ZNY chief. If the Brits took over NY Center, then we'll be hearing calls for a second revolution, and being an ex-pat living here I'll have to take cover !
