Josh Rosard 879188 Posted March 10, 2008 at 07:34 PM Posted March 10, 2008 at 07:34 PM Now that we are in DST, FNO's run from 2300Z-0300Z or 0000Z-0400Z. Time depends on the location of the event. East coast events start at 0100Z, west coast events start at 0000Z. Other location start times are at discretion. Josh Rosard ZDV PPL ASEL

Timothy Salamon 995912 Posted March 11, 2008 at 05:35 PM Posted March 11, 2008 at 05:35 PM I really wish people would just list the start time of the event in the local time zone of the featured airport, and not bother with Zulu time. More often than not, this question of what day the event starts comes up, because technically the event IS Saturday morning in Zulu time. I think it would be much easier to just look at the local time and add/subtract the hours to get to your time zone. ZOA events at KOAK and KSFO in PDT, ZAU events at KORD and KMKE in CDT, etc. This way the DAY would never be an issue, especially for events in the middle of the week which can generate more confusion since the day is not in the name of the event. Does anybody else agree with this? Timmeh! (ST) ZLA S3 N316BT, PAY7423, SWA6309, UPS431

Bryan Wollenberg 810243 Posted March 11, 2008 at 11:18 PM Posted March 11, 2008 at 11:18 PM What if people don't know the time zone in which the event is taking place? Could you imagine if a foreign country listed their event in local time? Bryan Wollenberg ZLA!
Timothy Salamon 995912 Posted March 12, 2008 at 12:06 AM Posted March 12, 2008 at 12:06 AM Yes, it could get messy for overseas events, but this is the VATUSA forum. And, I would still recommend putting the time zone after the time, like 1900 CDT for something in KDFW, KMCI, KORD, etc. or 2000 PDT for KLAX, KSEA, etc. The problem is that, in the US, evening events start the next day in Greenwich, which is the root of the confusion. Gerry Hattendorf 935415 Posted March 12, 2008 at 01:02 AM Posted March 12, 2008 at 01:02 AM Or perhaps keep it in UTC time (zulu) and reference this for no doubt. http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/ Gerry Hattendorf ZLA Webmaster VATSIM Supervisor
Bryan Wollenberg 810243 Posted March 12, 2008 at 05:16 AM Posted March 12, 2008 at 05:16 AM Yes, it could get messy for overseas events, but this is the VATUSA forum. And VATUSA events don't cater to our overseas friends? I completely agree that in the VATUSA forum, it might be wise to list the event in local time, but I thought we were arguing about the calendar entries, entries on the VATUSA homepage, and everything. ?? Here's an idea, why not list both? I usually put both when I was the Events Czar, and we were hosting a somewhat major event. Event: The Super ZLA Fly-In Time: May 16 - 1900 Local --- May 17 - 0200Z That leaves very little room for confusion. Why we have to decide on one vs. the other is just kinda silly, when you can list both and cover all bases. Bryan Wollenberg ZLA!
Timothy Salamon 995912 Posted March 12, 2008 at 05:21 AM Posted March 12, 2008 at 05:21 AM We reach an accord! Putting both times would be excellent, but I don't really think everyone would always do that. For example, the thread about the events listing for this week lists each event only in Zulu time, technically on the day before the actual event starts. But anyway, I believe the issue has run its course. Timmeh! (ST) ZLA S3 N316BT, PAY7423, SWA6309, UPS431
Matthew Jordan 919403 Posted March 12, 2008 at 04:05 PM Posted March 12, 2008 at 04:05 PM Guys, Does the exact time really matter? As long as you know around what time it is, that's ok.
Timothy Salamon 995912 Posted March 12, 2008 at 05:13 PM Posted March 12, 2008 at 05:13 PM Ok, I was going to put this topic to rest, but I'm not talking about the time it starts. The issue is that when ONLY the Zulu time for the event is listed, it can be a source of confusion as to which DAY the event starts, since evening events in the United States start after midnight ZULU time on the NEXT day. That is the problem, not the approximate hour. Now I'm done. Timmeh! (ST) ZLA S3 N316BT, PAY7423, SWA6309, UPS431
