Some important links for pilots to check our before flying into or out of ATL for FNO...

Flying with ZTL PDF file read this!!!

ATL ramp procedures ***VERY IMPORTANT***

By reading both of these links you will expedite traffic flow and make it a much more enjoyable event for everyone. Also Satellite airports such as KPDK, KAHN, KMCN, etc...will have full ATC services even if you don't see MCN_APP online. The reason for this is the airports are under jurisdiction the A80 which is ATL_APP control.

See you there!!

I am confused by the control of KAHN and KMCN by ATL_APP. KPDK makes perfect sense as it is in the tracon. I would have thought that a center controller would be providing service to KMCN if MCN_APP isn't on not ATL_APP. Plus it seems an approach controller would have to have a pretty big range setting to cover them both. Just trying to understand it all.

A80 (Atlanta Approach) does not cover just KATL, KPDK and the surrounding airports. A80 also provides the services for the Macon (MCN), Columbus (CSG), and Athens (AHN) areas. Basically think of it as 4 TRACONs in 1.

There is an art . . . to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

"Macon Approach," "Columbus Approach," and "Athens Approach" don't exist. Athens never has, and Columbus and Macon were consolidated into A80 almost ten years ago.

Well Gentlemen thanks for the good responses. That certainly does make a lot of sense. I'm sure I simply missed all of this in the new procedures and sectorization. Just another simple question to understand how it does work in the real world. Are these areas covered by the same controller even under the callsign of ATL_APP or is there a seperate controller for those areas that simply is working out of the A80? Way to make it as real as it gets regardless.

in the real world, there are 21 dedicated radar positions out of 28 scopes at the A80. The remaining seven scopes are used for 4 Sups and 3 TMU!

that's:

1. North Departure

2. South Departure

3. 'Trip' Departure

4. North West (DALLAS) Feeder

5. North East (LOGEN) Feeder

6. South East (Husky) Feeder

7. South West (Y) Feeder

8. North Final

9. South Final

10. 'Trip' Final

11. North West (Fulton) Satellite

12. North East (Peachtree) Satellite

13. South West Satellite (X)

14. South East Satellite (G)

15. Macon High ®

16. Macon Low (L)

17. Columbus East (E)

18. Columbus West (W)

19. Peachtree Final (Q)

20. Links Hi (Athens)

21. Links Low (Athens)

During the mid-night shift I believe they combine it down to three or four radar positions.

1. Atlanta Departure/Satellite Combined

2. Atlanta Approach/Feeder Combined

3. Macon/Columbus/Links Combined

As far as we go here on VATSIM, we only have eight A80 positions.

Here's a map if your curious:

http://www.vztlartcc.org/sitefiles/A80_combined.jpg

The circle is the Original Atlanta Approach and the East, Southeast, and Southwest areas are Links, Macon, and Columbus respectively.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

JX

Joe,

Thanks for the great response. I follow you completely now and that diagram did help it make sense. I'll have to try and fly into somewhere like KAHN. Pilots come challenge these guys as vZTL will be ready! Looking forward to it.
