That article, once again, can be found here: http://pilotcerts.laartcc.org/object/ZLA-common-pilot-errors.html Be sure to reference the sections on Vegas if you intend to fly... I just recently checked-out there and can honestly say it disgusts me how many people botch the departures and arrivals flying in and out of there... and many of the same individuals repetitively. Please review the departure and arrival chart VERY carefully before flying, and if you do not understand something, ask ON THE GROUND, for clarification before you attempt to fly it... I've worked Vegas approach nightly for the past week and a half and witnessed how it only takes one individual in the mix to cause m[Mod - Happy Thoughts]ive sequencing problems. It is very difficult to move aircraft to other locations due to the terrain limitations in the TRACON airspace if you manage to "fall off" the SID or STAR with the minimum vectoring altitudes and what not. Another bit of information I will include, as I regularly did for events in ZAU, please, when you check on from a radar handoff from center with approach, there are three pieces (at most) of information you should be giving the approach controller - altitude, the ATIS code, and heading/speed (if [Mod - Happy Thoughts]igned one). This will help cut down on wasted air time on the frequency... I don't need a life-story check on with your location as I can clearly see where you are if I bought your handoff from another controller. Once again, your location is NOT necessary on a radar handoff - only non-radar this applies. The ATIS is also important to check ahead of time to begin planning for your arrival runway (thats right! You no longer need to PM the controller "what runway can I expect?"), being that is so widely available for use on the network now. The approach controllers will likely be quite busy much of the night and having to repeat weather/NOTAM information to each pilot that fails to check on with it can become quite an annoyance and, again, eats up radio time that may be necessary to turn someone on final, give an approach clearance, speed restriction, etc... These simple items (which will take all of 10-15 minutes at best to review before you go) will help make the experience more enjoyable for everyone... Available directly from liveatc.net... and here are the links: http://d.liveatc.net/klas.m3u - Approach/Departure feed http://d.liveatc.net/klas_twr.m3u - Tower feed You honestly can learn quite a bit from listening for just a few minutes... pay specific attention to how pilots check on initially, how they read back instructions... this will help you cut back air time significantly... its actually quite enjoyable listening to these feeds and a lot can be learned. Somewhere in there is a warm welcome for pilots to come and join us for the FNO We plan on having some solid staffing and are looking forward to utilizing the staffing plan that was constructed shortly before the MITRE events. AJ is right, though. As with any FNO or large scale event, brevity on the radio is key for controllers to be able to do their job, as is compliance with ATC instructions. Those instructions are there to ensure that everyone makes it down safely and efficiently. As an aside, we will try to arrange staffing of the nearby Delta fields (VGT and HND) around Vegas to provide some interesting sights and sounds for GA pilots, too. The transition over LAS to/from either of those fields should make for a great sight seeing opportunity with planes arrival from all directions into Vegas. I probably live for it as most of the guys here at ZLA do, but it's only enjoyable when the majority can keep up - as I'm sure most here would feel. That was more of a vent than anything (but also meant to be informative and an eye-opener to some ), I'm sure we'll manage to make it work one way or another... I certainly hope everyone enjoys it, it should be a lot of fun, especially if GA traffic comes out.
