I realize this is very short notice, but I am giving a VATSIM demo to a local pilots [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ociation this afternoon in northern New Jersey. The focus of the demo is how VATSIM can be used by real world IFR pilots to help maintain their currency (from a safety standpoint), and for IFR students to use this as a tool to help build their flying and communication skills.

I'll be conducting an IFR flight from KSNA to KLGB and back, executing a full approach at KLGB and vectors to final back at KSNA. If time permits, I'll throw in some pattern work, too. We will have ATC online.

What I'm asking is that if any pilots are available to conduct flights in or out of those fields between 7pm and 8pm EDT (4-5pm PDT) this afternoon/evening, I would appreciate it.

Bear in mind, these are real world pilots looking to evaluate the network as a serious tool. What we don't want are pilots who are serious tools If you're comfortable operating your airplane and are familiar with ATC basic procedures, I'd appreciate the help.

That was really great turnout for such short notice. Thanks to everyone that flew and controlled.

There were approximately 14 pilots in attendance. 12 were instrument rated, one was an instrument student, the other was a VFR student pilot. I spoke for about 10 mins prior to the flight, fielding lots of questions and setting the context of the demo.

We called for IFR clearance, shot two approaches then returned for a full stop landing. Everyone followed along (I brought copies of the two approach plates for everyone to review and use during the flight). Evidently I had their attention because when I called for the loc freq, intersecting radials, timing, and minimums, people recited them without skipping a beat.

There was traffic all over the sky and the ground, which made all the difference in the world.

Many of them are not sim pilots to begin with, so it might be a big leap for them to start using the sim and VATSIM, but the few sim pilots that were there seemed like they might take the plunge.

Prior to getting vectored to final, I asked if anyone wanted to take the controls and I'd handle the radio....there were no takers. I think everyone was freaked out knowing that they would be being watched. I took this to mean that they were taking it seriously, which is a good thing.

The owner of the flight school might have me come back to do a familiarization session for the instructors. Those instructors will then be in a position to recommend and monitor their students' use of VATSIM. We'll see if that comes to p[Mod - Happy Thoughts].

If it does, and you need traffic, please give notice further in advance. I would have liked to participate but I couldn't on such short notice.
