FSX Clouds and performance

I am using the default cloud textures, and when I set the cloud settings to DETAILED CLOUDS and LOW spread, I get a case of the flickers when turning....FPS will go from 27 to 5, especially during approach and while on the ground.

If I switch to the non-detailed cloud settings, smooth as silk.

So, I'm thinking this is a texture issue? Does anyone have new high performance detailed clouds for FSX? (I'll go check avsim too ) Or is this a bigger issue?

Thanks,

Jeff Thomas

Drawing the detailed clouds just takes a TON of horsepower, particularly at larger resolutions.

When I was using my 19" display, I experienced only a modest frame rate hit when I turned the detailed clouds on with my 8800GTS. When I changed to the 24" widescreen, it is rather hit or miss. If the weather is relatively clear or I'm high enough were the ground details aren't as prevalent, my frame rates stay acceptable with detailed clouds. If it is very cloudy, short of a solid overcast, I average framerates in the mid-20s, but I get the occasional 5-10 fps frames that make the screen jerk here and there. So I have to go to simple clouds again, at least until I get a more powerful CPU.

I think there are some add-ons out there that have some more frame rate friendly cloud textures. That might be worth looking into if it is a huge deal to you.
