Ryan Parry Posted October 30, 2008 at 03:31 AM Posted October 30, 2008 at 03:31 AM Ok, so I'm curious, does any body know why why the state that are not apart of the mainland have a "P" and not a "K"? For example Honolulu PHNL Anchorage PANC Fairbanks PAFA See what I mean? Ryan Parry - 965346 www.pilotcentral.org | www.oakartcc.org
Ernesto Alvarez 818262 Posted October 30, 2008 at 04:19 AM Posted October 30, 2008 at 04:19 AM i always wondered the same. from what ive read, the first letter whether it be a K or P or whatever is the country identifier. so its weird that those wouldnt have the K. maybe the P's are for Pacific, or pacific islands? (wouldnt make sense for alaska)
David Klain 874106 Posted October 30, 2008 at 04:45 AM Posted October 30, 2008 at 04:45 AM Yes, the P's are because they are part of the Pacific Region (much like E was initially for Europe). Note that US airports in the Caribbean (USVI and Puerto Rico) fall into that region's coding scheme as well... Dave

Alexander Nolting 887789 Posted November 6, 2008 at 11:59 PM Posted November 6, 2008 at 11:59 PM I am living 15km (~10miles) from KQAK and you will not succeed to find that airport in the U.S at all For more confusion this site is also more likely governed by the U.K military and is not on U.K. territory at all. Must be a very small airport, because I never heard of it before I got some METAR sources from tha NOAA servers. You will find it in central Europe (E -): "Lat: 51.92N, Lon: 8.75E ICAO Used: KQAK" So "K - Contiguous USA" isn't always the case. http://www.aviador.es/fields.php?country=USA-MIL “the biggest enemy of freedom are happy slaves“
David Klain 874106 Posted November 7, 2008 at 04:40 AM Posted November 7, 2008 at 04:40 AM Actually Alexander, what you are referencing on the page you link to are US military weather reporting stations...which feed into the US weather system managed by NOAA. Most but not all of those are located on military airfields, but these codes tie to US weather reporting stations and (because they feed into the US system) have the "K" designator. In some cases, those weather stations are on airfields with a different ICAO code.... Dave
