Don Cassity 1086218 Posted November 29, 2008 at 11:27 AM Posted November 29, 2008 at 11:27 AM I am running X-Plane V9 on Windows XP. I have no other plugins running other than one for my Hughes 500D. Have even tried turning it off as well. This is what happens. I logon to internet, fire up X-Plane go to plugins tab and select XSquawkBox and click on connect. I fill out all the information that is needed and click connect. I get a window that reads connecting. The window goes away only to return with disconnected. I have tried several servers with the same results. I started out using V102r1. I read on this forum that someone had the same problem and went to v100. So I ran off and downloaded it and trashed the old/newer version and placed v100 in it's place. Same thing happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Don

Don Cassity 1086218 Posted December 1, 2008 at 05:14 AM Author Posted December 1, 2008 at 05:14 AM Where do I find the XSB connection dialog? If it's what shows up on screen while in X-Plane, there is nothing to look at. Just "connecting" then "Disconnected". However. if it is something else let me know where to look. Thanks Don
Wade Williams 877539 Posted December 1, 2008 at 06:08 AM Posted December 1, 2008 at 06:08 AM It's the dialog where you type your callsign, VATSIM ID, p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]word, server name, etc. That is to say, the dialog that appears when you select "Connect" from the XSB menu and then hit the "Connect" button to actually connect to the network. BTW, whatever problem you're having is not related to version 1.0.2. You should remove version 1.0 and go back to version 1.0.
Don Cassity 1086218 Posted December 2, 2008 at 04:46 PM Author Posted December 2, 2008 at 04:46 PM Ahh, ok, I know what your talking about. Let me go back and download 1.0.2 and take a screen shot of the connection dialog. Thanks for your help so far. Don
Keith Smith Posted December 2, 2008 at 05:10 PM Posted December 2, 2008 at 05:10 PM Don, the screenshot would be great, but in the mean time, what server IP address have you entered in the connection dialogue? Can you confirm that you have entered your VATSIM ID and p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]word, too?
Don Cassity 1086218 Posted December 3, 2008 at 07:32 AM Author Posted December 3, 2008 at 07:32 AM Hey, guess what? After installing v1.0.2 again so that I could take a screen shot for you I clicked "connect" and it connected! I set a flight plan and fumbled around as to what to do next. Was able to listen to ATC but was unable to transmit. I went through the sound set-up but when I pushed the ' key nothing happened. Or at least no one replied back. But hey, I was able to get connected! Thanks for the help. If there is anything else I should know, I'm all ears.
Don Cassity 1086218 Posted December 3, 2008 at 01:42 PM Author Posted December 3, 2008 at 01:42 PM Oh, by the way. This is the server IP I used 66.221.192.84 out of TX.
Wade Williams 877539 Posted December 3, 2008 at 07:40 PM Posted December 3, 2008 at 07:40 PM Don, Not sure what server that would be. The list of VATSIM servers can be found here: http://www.vatsim.info/benaway/vatservers.htm You should connect via hostname rather than IP address - so type the name in the server box, such as "usa-se.vatsim.net" (without the quotes)
Don Cassity 1086218 Posted December 3, 2008 at 08:42 PM Author Posted December 3, 2008 at 08:42 PM Wade. I went to vatsim.net and clicked on who's online. From there I I saw a list of servers with IP addresses. All of them were numbers. The only host names I saw were on the Voice servers. I tried rw.liveatc.net out of Cal. but could not get connected. went back to the numbered IP address listed below out of Texas and was able to get connected. What is the difference in a host name and using numbers? I will check-out the link you provided and see what I can find and try them out. I will also try usa-se.vatsim.net later today after work and let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help. Don
Don Cassity 1086218 Posted December 3, 2008 at 09:09 PM Author Posted December 3, 2008 at 09:09 PM I just thought of another question. Is it possible for a pilot to talk to another pilot? Say, for example, two planes doing touch and goes at a uncontrolled field? If so, how is that done? Thanks Don

Not sure how I missed it earlier today. You should use its name "usa-s3.vatsim.net" rather than the IP address, but otherwise it's fine.
Wade Williams 877539 Posted December 3, 2008 at 09:36 PM Posted December 3, 2008 at 09:36 PM I just thought of another question. Is it possible for a pilot to talk to another pilot? Say, for example, two planes doing touch and goes at a uncontrolled field? If so, how is that done? Thanks Don Don, For operations at an uncontrolled field, pilots use Unicom, 122.8 which is text-only. If you want to use voice, you and the other pilot could use a "private" radio frequency (i.e. one not in use by any controllers in the area) or many VA's have their own Teamspeak servers for company pilots to communicate. But in either case, you'd need to use text to coordinate getting together with the other pilot on voice.

If you don't hear your voice played back to you during that, then nobody else will hear you either. Also, make sure that you have Push-to-Talk key mapped in the XSB preferences. Typically you'll also want to have that key not mapped to anything in X-Plane. (You also can set a joystick button to your push-to-talk key if you prefer). Don Cassity 1086218 Posted December 4, 2008 at 05:32 AM Author Posted December 4, 2008 at 05:32 AM Thanks Wade. Think the only thing I have to do about the mic is make sure the key is not mapped to anything else. Forgot about that Also, I tried typing in the host name like you suggested and I couldn't get a connection. Again, I went back to using the numbers and it connected just fine. What is the reasoning behind using the host name? Thanks for the input about being able to talk to other pilots. That is what I was thinking but it's good to know for sure. Tonight I noticed that some airports support voice and others don't. Is that because no one is controlling them? Now for something different. Regarding the CSL files. There are so many of them. What ones are the most practical? I know it probably has a lot to do with what and where I fly. But is there a good over-all CSL I can download? While I'm on the subject of seeing planes. If another pilot has the same aircraft as I do loaded on his machine, say a Hughes 500, and he is flying a Cessna I'm flying the Hughes. Will he see a Hughes 500 copter? I know these probably sound like pretty silly questions. I'm just trying to get my head wrapped around everything. The pieces are starting to fall in place As always, thanks for your help.
