Dale Allanson 1023895 Posted December 21, 2008 at 04:16 PM Posted December 21, 2008 at 04:16 PM I'm very lost at the moment, I've been searching and reading how to get started up. But it keeps mentioning if you're with FSX. I [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ume I have to download this software but I have no idea. Please help!
Brian Fuller 973577 Posted December 21, 2008 at 04:21 PM Posted December 21, 2008 at 04:21 PM Are you talking about the actual Flight Simulator X software? If so, you can purchase it at most Software places or online http://www.ebgames.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=72573 Or do you mean Squakbox or FSInn to fly online with FSX? Dale Allanson 1023895 Posted December 21, 2008 at 04:23 PM Author Posted December 21, 2008 at 04:23 PM Well I only came across this on the net. So I need to have the software FSX or similar to be able to use Vatsim? I have never played a game like that before but now I'm really intrigued. I'm gonna see if I can pick it up cheap somewhere. Plus I feel like a bit of an idiot. I've spent hours reading and trying to understand without being able to connect or get any hands-on. I was getting frustrated but it turns out I'm just naive. Brian Fuller 973577 Posted December 21, 2008 at 05:12 PM Posted December 21, 2008 at 05:12 PM Not a problem. Yes, VATSIM is really two fold. There is the Pilot Part that works with flight simulators and there is the Controller part that works with Controller Software. You can probably find Flight Simulator 2004 (aka FS9) for pretty cheap, I'd guess under $20.00 (US), and it works just fine. FSX is a bit more, probably closer to $45.00. I believe X-Plane also works, search for that on the net. The Controller Software is Free if you are into that instead.

No need to feel foolish for not knowing. There was a time for each of us that we didn’t know. As far as being intrigued, it started out great, and continues to get even more intriguing and great for a long time. After nearly five years, I still find it intriguing. As far as the Flight Simulator software, look at it as the vehicle. That’s the only purchase necessary. After that it’s all free. Look at the PRC ( www.vatsim.net/prc ) to get a good learning curb of the network and procedures. It might appear hard and foreign, but I [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ure you, it’s not. Once you get involved, it’ll all fall together very naturally. The information in the PRC will start making a lot of sense. Being new to Flight Simulator, I will suggest that you practice a few of the pilot lessons that’s included with the installation. Don’t let it discourage you if you can’t get through most of them. Very few of us can. However, the dialogue is a good start for getting familiar with the aircraft. Try to get to a point where you can taxi from a gate to a specific runway number, take off, fly an [Mod - Happy Thoughts]igned heading, altitude, and speed [Mod - Happy Thoughts]igned by ATC, and land at a specific runway. If you can do those things, I would consider you very much ready to park at a gate, connect to VATSIM and request clearance. There’s a first flight lesson in the required reading section of the PRC that gives details of how to connect and listen to the activity for immediate familiarity. Welcome to VATSIM! If you need help with tips on handling your plane, feel free to contact me, I’d be glad to help. If you get the latest version of Flight similar (FSX), you can schedule/book a flight for a copilot at http://flightsim.apollo3.com/booking . I’d be glad to join your flight and give you some pointers. -- L. James -- L. D. Dale Allanson 1023895 Posted December 23, 2008 at 12:16 PM Author Posted December 23, 2008 at 12:16 PM Thanks for your help. Now I just need to track down the software.
Larry James 901346 Posted December 23, 2008 at 02:59 PM Posted December 23, 2008 at 02:59 PM Thanks for your help. Now I just need to track down the software. You might be surprised how resourceful the PRC happens to be. Notice the topic section of the PRC. For most things, if you put your question into words, then look at the topic section on the left, you'll find your answer. In this case, you said you need to track down the software. Look at the topic section. The word software is listed twice. So the answer is there. We're glad to help. If you have a problem, try to use some of the wording of the PRC to help give us an idea where you're getting stuck. In this case, if you have a specific question about the software, review the software section of the PRC, then post your question. -- L. James -- L. D.
