GA Tower controllers at small airports

I was trying Squawkbox for the first time today. I saw only a few ARTCC's and LAX control tower. Then a message box appeared informing me that SMO (Santa Monica) control tower was available at 120.1. Unfortunately he closed the tower just as I was about to test the waters. How do I find more small GA airport controllers? I am a real student pilot in San Diego and I think this is a great way to practise radio technique between flights. Are there any controllers for San Diego airports or other small GA airports? Even a virtual LAX is a little intimidating to a guy flying a little R-22. Thanks, Dean Perry

1. Get ServInfo if you haven't already, all Vatsim pilots use it: http://www.avsim.com/hangar/utils/servinfo it's not required to fly on Vatsim, but very useful.

With ServInfo you can view all current ATC controller and airplane at Vatsim network.

2. In addition there are some ways to see ATC schedule.

- In ServInfo there are a button EUROBOOK (but not much NorthAmerica booking)

- On Vatsim right side select Division and then into ARTCC or Country. (Each ARTCC/FIR may have there own ATC booking system)

3. And note at Vatsim, since there can not be as much controllers as in real world. If there is a Center ATC on line, the center online should cover all airports that don't have own controllers, similar as the approach/departure/tower/ground/delivery.
