Jacques Chardon White 8109 Posted January 20, 2009 at 11:28 PM Posted January 20, 2009 at 11:28 PM Firstly, after a long absence from the VATSIM community, I'm happy to say that I'm back, albeit it on a limited basis. I'm experiencing something I consider to be unusual. I can see other aircraft via their loaded CSLs, however, they're not able to see me. I'm running Windows XP, FS9, SB v4.0. Additionally, I've got Norton Internet Security loaded. From previous posts, its been determined that Norton is the problem from seeing other aircraft yet this isn't the case with me. In my Norton firewall, I've allowed squawkbox.exe to operate (in and out). I don't want to uninstall Norton as I do a considerable of work using the internet. Any suggestions and guidance would be most appreciated. Thank you. J C White

Norman Blackburn Posted January 21, 2009 at 09:23 AM Posted January 21, 2009 at 09:23 AM Hi JC, Great to see you back both here and of course the chance to speak with you a few days ago. Whilst the main cause is Norton, make sure that the following apply: Are you connecting (if not done automatically) FS multiplayer toi the session started by Squawkbox? To check, in FS flights | Multiplayer menu, does it say connect or disconnect? In SB if you are at a field where you *know* there to be other traffic and you type .cheat model what does SB reply? If it lists a bunch of other traffic and you can't see them then Norton is most likely your issue. There is no observer button in SB. When used in FSInn it has the opposite effect in that you can see other traffic but they can't see you. Norman
Jacques Chardon White 8109 Posted January 21, 2009 at 01:51 PM Author Posted January 21, 2009 at 01:51 PM Thank you for your replies. When connecting to Squawkbox, I do so from the MODULES option in FS9. Additionally, I've connected via the Squawkbox stand-alone version with the multi-player function. In both cases, I've done the .cheat model entry numerous times and a list of aircraft and callsigns appears---except mine. Squawkbox let's me be seen by ATC, just not my fellow pilots. I've sent private texts to aircraft sitting next to me, asking if they can see my aircraft. The reply has always been 'no.' Very baffling. My port settings are right on the money, based upon what is listed in the Squawkbox set-up guide. I have no trouble seeing other aircraft or following them on taxi per ATC instruction and, at one point, ATC instructed an aircraft behind to follow me; the pilot replied, "What American 737? I don't see an American 737 in front of me." I had to chuckle--the thought of a 747 running over me or sitting on top of me wasn't pretty! What should I be trying with my settings? Norman, it was very nice chatting with you as well and I thank you all for your help. J C White KTPA

J C White KTPA You should uninstall your third party firewall/antivirus program to fully identify whether it's the culprit, which most likely it is. After you identify that it's the culprit, you should communicate with the support people of your third party firewall/antivirus program to help you tame it, or look into finding one you can tame. The builtin security of Windows, which is quiet compatible with Squawkbox will suffice while you perform the test. -- L. James -- L. D.
