Hello everybody,

My name is Amir Paz I am the Training Direcotr of Vatsim Israel.

I am a real world pilot and flying out of Springbank (CYBW) Alberta.

Every day I am looking to get some ATC in the Calgary area but i have never seen one on my serverinfo screen.

Does VATCAN has any active controllers in the Calgary area?

thanks!

Amir Paz,

Hi Amir,

Calgary is staffed often but it depends on the time of day. Usually you will find more ATC around there on weekends than on weekdays.

I was glancing through the records (old iron mics as I can't figure a better way to find ATC records). It seems Calgary hasn't made more than 20hrs a month in recent history, what's a good time to catch them?

I'm an active controller who lives in the Calgary area - unfortunately for you I control at Los Angeles I do see the boys sometimes in the evening staffing the FIR so I guess it is hit and miss.

As a side note: I've been trying to organize a Vatsim demo for other pilots out at YBW as a potential educational environment for situational awareness and radio proficiency. So far it has been a tough sell.

Where do you fly out of on the field? Do you rent or own? Pilot or student? I'm currently taking my PPL at the CFC. Would be interesting to hook up with another Vatsim person one day out there.

My brother and I have started flying over the last week between CZEG, CYYC and CYVR. Unfortunately we haven't run into any ATC so far. I've only just started Flight Sim X and VATSIM and I have to say it's pretty sweet.

Had a few planes all hit CYYC at the same time, myself from CZEG, my brother form CYVR and someone else from CYUL. We managed to sort it out on 122.8. It was great having some blips on the radar.

If there were scheduled times for ATC posted on the VATCAN site I'd make the effort to give you guys some traffic to manage which, in turn, would give me a chance to address my mic fright and lack of experience on that side of things. I live in Alberta so woudl prefer to fly there as opposed to flying elsewhere to get ATC. If that's possible.

Thanks for the traffic Donald...I happen to know as a fact that you will find ATC available in CZVR (Vancouver) most nights between 19:00 and 23:00 Pacific time, being my former FIR Vancouver has always prided itself on providing ATC on a regular basis. Quite often you will see Edmonton, Vancouver and Seattle staffed at the same time, especially on the weekends beginning on Friday evenings (again, Pacific time at/or around 01:00 - 02:00 Zulu.)

We have tried scheduling ATC but as VATSIM is a strictly volunteer-based service it rarely works as real life has a tendency to get in the way of virtual schedules. When I served as FIR Chief in CZVR we tried scheduling and posting the schedule on our website, but found it almost impossible to keep to it, there always seemed to be missing gaps as controllers were at the mall a bit longer than they wanted or the wife/girl friend/significant other had different plans

Please keep checking for ATC coverage in the Canadian west, the best time being around 19:00 Mountain/Pacific and I'm sure you'll receive the finest, friendliest service on the network, sooner rather than later.

Hey Amir,

Sorry there hasn't been a whole lot of controllers around, being summer a lot of the guys are out on holidays, and some of us are just working like dogs. Usually after the summer is over the controller coverage picks up as we're all inside trying to stay warm. I should be on a fair bit this weekend though, so I hope to see you there.
