Christopher Kahl 908183 Posted August 24, 2005 at 07:49 PM Posted August 24, 2005 at 07:49 PM Hey, this is a question that's been bugging me for a while. I'm running a Dell 4550, Pentium 4 2.0 GHz, 256MB RAM, 30GB HD, and nVidia GeForce 440 MX 64MB Graphics card. I'm able to run FS9 no problem most of the time, but it seems at night they occasionaly dip through the floor, and also when ever there are any clouds around. I've tweaked the settings a bit on my card, and a little bit in FS, so I can keep the quality and rates up. I'm just curious, why does FS9 get jumpy, when other programs, such as X-Plane, Orbitor, and even Microsoft Train Sim work smoothly all the time? Thanks, Chris Christopher Kahl (I1) Events Coordinator Albuquerque Air Route Traffic Control Center zabartcc.org

Thanks, Chris While the 2.0 ghz is plenty, your two bottlenecks are your RAM (256 is the bare minimum, IMO) and your graphics card. I have a 3.0 Northwood with 1GB of PC3200 DDR memory and a 128 MB NVidia 5950. Runs very well almost all of the time. Dave Wild Posted August 26, 2005 at 03:52 PM Posted August 26, 2005 at 03:52 PM Christopher, Mark's answer points you in the right direction but remember that any PC can be brought to its knees by FS9 if you are agressive enough with the settings. I have an Athlon 2500+ and a Radeon 9800Pro with 1GB RAM and with a complex add-on aircraft at an add-on airport I can struggle to get FPS in the high 20's. Add in cloud and the FPS drops like a stone. To help things try to make sure any background tasks are kept to a minimum and have a look at the various OS tweaks either in the AVSIM forums or tweak sites on the web. If you struggle with FPS running FS9 on its own then you will struggle when flying on VATSIM because of all the other things going on in the background.
