Controller covering airport

Hi

I am brand new to vatsim, having only got it up and working today after working through some problems. I loaded up vatsim and was loaded onto the west usa server. There was only one controller online and he was in seattle. Everything worked fine and i was glad to hear someones voice even though i wasn't using a mic.

I know this might seem like a dumb question but im just curious about how it works if you don't have a controller at your current airport or destination airport. I was planning on flying from Vancouver to Calgary. I just don't know if the controller is supposed to direct me and vector me and direct me to runways if he is controlling seattle.

Thanks

Jed

There are no dumb questions! The answer is no. If the Seattle controller is online, let's say SEA_CTR, then he or she is only offering ATC to those within SEA airspace. The controller you need from Vancouver would be CZYR_CTR. This is the controller for the Vancouver airspace. The VATSIM training docomeents explain this pretty well, and gets into more depth about what specific controllers do and where they control. If you have any other questions, never hesitate to ask!

Thanks for the responce and that makes sense. Im just wondering what you do if the isn't a controller in your airspace or the airspace your going to.

If there isn't a controller in your airspace or you are i uncontrolled airspace, you should switch tune to 122.80, VATSIM UNICOM, which is a text-only designated frequency that is just there to let other traffic know your intentions and others around you. If you are in uncontrolled airspace, but then approach airspace that IS controlled, the controller will contact you via Private Message saying to switch to his frequency. Don't worry, if you get this message, you aren't in trouble or anything, it's a default message that controllers use every time an aircraft approaches their airspace.

Jed, You might was to look at a program called vroute (Google it) It will show you all the regions in the world, and which one has ATC connected at that moment. If you're looking to fly somewhere with ATC coverage, it'll show you where to go. It'll also show you all the pilots connected and where they are as well. As far as connecting to different servers, it doesn't really matter which one you connect to. The servers are placed all around the world for and they all interface with each other, so if you're connected to a USA server, you will see pilots and ATC that are connected to a Europe server, the reason for different servers is so that you can connect to the closest one to you to cut down on lag with your connection (Correct me if I'm wrong guys) and it spreads out the connections so we don't bog the network down. G'luck with your adventures, and we'll see you soon.
