My gut says that, for the future, you want more system RAM and more/faster processors (cores). X-Plane is very CPU hungry, and is likely to get more so. That's just my gut, nothing better. Your best reading for the "inside scoop" on x-plane performance may be Ben Supnik's blog. Read that entry, and go digging into his past (and future) entries.
