Thomas Perillo 1111487 Posted September 12, 2009 at 06:13 PM Posted September 12, 2009 at 06:13 PM I have a new computer (Vista 64 = OS) and just installed FS9 on my P drive (programs). When I attempt to save a flight (KLVK) I receive an error message from FS9 "Invalid flight name. Flight will not be saved". If I try to save a flight plan (VFR Livermore Mun to Metro Oakland Intl.PLN) I receive an error message from FS9 "Flightplans can only be loaded from or saved to the 'Flight Simulator Files' directory. I am unable to find that directory (I did have that directory when FS9 was installed with XP).I've attempted to create that director and point to it, but still get the same error message. I've attempted a clean install of FS9 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888846), installing to the C: drive. I have the compatibilty setting as "Run as admin", disable desktop composition, run as Win XP). If no one can help directly with solving the errors, is anyone aware of an add-on program that could be used as a substitute for the built in flight planner. Appreciate any help! Richard Gerrish Posted September 12, 2009 at 08:41 PM Posted September 12, 2009 at 08:41 PM simroutes.com or vroute is better by far then the built in Flight planner in either FS9 or FSX. Have you turned UAC off? Richard Gerrish Developer, STM Applications Group
Thomas Perillo 1111487 Posted September 13, 2009 at 05:41 PM Author Posted September 13, 2009 at 05:41 PM Thanks for your reply, Rich(ard) and suggestion to turn off the UAC -- which I have done. I appreciate the info on the other flight planners. What I wasn't clear about is that I am looking for was a way to get GPS routing capabilty which I don't have now that I can't save .pln files. (I am a newbie to on-line flying.) I plan to update to Win 7 so this might all go away anyway. Thx again.

You need to save PLN files into My Docomeents\Flight Simulator Files. That's what it's looking for. Why Microsoft coded this limitation into FS9 is beyond me. Cheers! Luke ... Thomas Perillo 1111487 Posted September 14, 2009 at 12:13 AM Author Posted September 14, 2009 at 12:13 AM Luke - Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately for some reason there is no Vista 'Docomeents' folder inside my user folder. If I attempt to create the path 'My Docomeents\Flight Simulator Files' Vista only allows the path 'Docomeents\Flight Simulator Files'. I created that path in other locations and point to it inside of FS9 but still get the error message "Flight Plans can ooly be loaded from or saved to the 'Flight Simulator Files' directory". (I have some other OS problems and Dell is recommending an OS reinstall - I'm guessing some of this is connected)
Richard Gerrish Posted September 14, 2009 at 09:17 PM Posted September 14, 2009 at 09:17 PM It might be a combo of both a bad install of FS coupled with your OS issues. jut tried with a friends copy of FS9 on vista ultimate and it worked fine. Back everything up and throw in the factory DvDs Richard Gerrish Developer, STM Applications Group

Unfortunately for some reason there is no Vista 'Docomeents' folder inside my user folder. How about going to "My Docomeents" or "Docomeents" from the Start Menu? Cheers! Luke ... (I have some other OS problems and Dell is recommending an OS reinstall - I'm guessing some of this is connected) You might consider an attempt to repair your docomeents folder. First check to see where it’s configured to be located. By default it would be c:\Users\[your login]\Docomeents. You can check this by clicking Start -> (Right Click) Docomeents -> Properties -> Location. You can conveniently change the location to the default by entering the default I indicated above. Or you can create a docomeents folder in the area you have configured. If you have an area configured that doesn’t exist, go to that directory area and create the folder. In this case you can go to: C:\Users\[your login] Then create a folder called Docomeents. This might repair a problems with a number of programs. I'm not sure if this is what you're saying you already did. If you didn't, give it a try. -- L. James -- L. D. Thomas Perillo 1111487 Posted September 21, 2009 at 12:24 AM Author Posted September 21, 2009 at 12:24 AM Hi James, Thanks for your suggestion. I have "Docomeents" pointing to a partition where I keep docomeents. I've tried pointing FS9 there and also to c: No Luck. Since I plan to upgrade to Win 7 next month, I'm thinking this will only be a short term problem. The good news is I am getting more experience doing some manual flight planning. Flight Simulator will use your configured docomeents area. Trying to change which area Flight Simulator uses will probably break flight simulator. When you click on Start -> (right click) My Docomeents, under the Target Tab what do you have in the target field? 1) If you click on Find Target does it take you to a folder and highlight your My Docomeents area? 2) Will clicking the highlighted area take you to where you keep your docomeents? 3) Do you have a My Music and My Pictures folder in that area? -- L.
