I have been working on getting this thing set up for 2 months. I had a laptop, upgraded to 1gig, hi end video, still many problems 2k worth of "computer stuff".

1. Can not calibrate voice or mic. Took advice and skipped to only hear engine noise when connected.

2. Can not see other aircraft while observing,

3. How does one get off of the active runway without driving through the gr[Mod - Happy Thoughts] area?

4. I am real tired, and about to give up on this, one thing leads to many others, does this stuff really work, I am starting to wonder?

Accomplishments

1. I can not believe I was able to find and work through the router stuff. (3 WEEK PROBLEM)

2. Not able to connect, that p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]word stuff, changed it, but DID'NT CHANGE IT ( 6 DAY PROBLEM)

3. Computer crashing (laptop) (6 MONTHS)

1, 2, 3, sign up for http://www.vatsim.net/prc and read. Then read some more.

4, trust me, it does work.

1 and 3 should be easy fixed. 2 is a little bit harder depending what your system setup is. Are you using SB3? I sometimes have issues with SB3 making the multiplayer session and the only way to fix it is rather complicated with firewall setting and script blocking excludes and a bunch of stuff. The first time I set up SB3 it worked perfectly, Then the next time after a reformatt it took me a month to get right. By design, Squawkbox 3 should connect to the multiplayer (so you can see other planes) without intervention on connecting to the vatsim network. You may not be seeing other aircraft simply because there are no aircraft in your area TO see (they must be witin 10 miles of your position for them to be seen) or the Multiplayer session may be being blocked by a firewall, router, or any other number of harder to figure out issues. if your using FSinn, I can't help you cos I'v never used that. However this is only one issue out of 3

Part 3 is the easiest. To get off the active there are a few ways to do it. 1: taxi down the runway and take the first taxiway exit to your left or right side, Hit controll S (CTRL and S key at the same time) to get a map and press + or - to zoom in or out (if it doesn't zoom mouse click on the red cross in the middle of the map and try again) Find the nearest tarmac area (big wide concrete area connected to your current position by taxiways... think of taxiways like streets, the tarmac like a parking lot, and the runway as a big interstate highway. You want to keep clear of the runway when connected online.) You can also press the Y key (slew mode) and you can move around in cheat mode to place your aircraft somewhere convenient as quick as possible. Another good idea is when selecting from the start menu (or the go to airport menu) select to start at a gate or parking area and not a runway. Gates are those little hallways that can connect an airport terminal to an aircraft. parking areas are self explanitory.

here is a map of Sydney Airport YSSY. The green areas are good to park in, Those that arn't marked by green are either Taxiways, Runways, occupied by buildings, or land needed for other services for whatever reason, When on the ground these areas should be reasonably obvious. Basically if you are close to a terminal building and not near any yellow lines, white dotted lines, etc you should be ok.

The little green dots I'v placed in this map are Gates, Usually the best place to park an airliner (ie 737, A320, 747 MD80 etc) the other green areas are suitable for other aircraft types not usually found near gates (Dash-8, Cessna, Beech King Air etc)

Ok number 1... This sounds like the soundcard is recording from itself rather than the michrophone...

Go into windows and on the taskbar click the "Speaker" (or go into Controll Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices - Volume tab, and Advanced. both of these go to the same window.)

It should look something similar to this:

default.JPG

Open the "Options" menu and click Properties, this should bring up a window...

Properties.JPG

Select "recording" from this menu and click OK, this will change the program to have different options

mike.JPG

Tick the "Michrophone" line (I have highlited it in red) and make sure that ONLY this option is checked. The program should automatically uncheck anything else when Michrophone is checked.

before you exit the program go back to Options -> Properties and click on Mixer device.

If like me you have 2 different sound devices (in this case a soundcard and a USB headset) you may need to experiment using different settings, and having the USB headset michrophone, Just go back to the previous step and make sure the USB headset Michrophone is set up to take sound. Most USB headsets have this option by default, but most Soundcard based headsets (ones with a 3.5mm solid jack instead of a USB plug) have the default soundcard options, which is to say, The sound recorded is either "Sound Master" "What u hear" or "Wave". All 3 of those options will end up transmitting engine noise over Squawkbox rather than your voice.

Thanks for the help. I have done all the you stated. I now have sound, I do not think I can transmit ( I have a plantronics headset) I was not able to select microphone while in the plantronics set up though, everything eles went fine.

I can see aircraft numbers and altitudes, not sure if this is the extent of what I am supposed to see, I thought I would see actual airplanes. I do not see any.

While logged on observing. I notice that I hear voices (not clear), I sometimes I see text, but not on every transmition. I have toggled between Voice + text and still not text all the time, and no voice all the time, it appears to be transmitted occ[Mod - Happy Thoughts]ionally.
