Daniel Eamon Brennan Posted December 20, 2009 at 01:17 PM Posted December 20, 2009 at 01:17 PM Hello, I am looking to upgrade my computer's GPU. The problem is, I know very little about this sort of thing, and I would gladly appreciate some help on the matter. Details are: Main Circuit Board 3.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 16 kilobyte primary memory cache 2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache Board: Dell Inc. 0WG261 Serial Number: ..CN698615BT0F40. Bus Clock: 800 megahertz BIOS: Dell Inc. A04 02/03/2006 Memory Modules c,d Slot 'DIMM_1' has 512 MB (serial number 00003192) Slot 'DIMM_3' is Empty Slot 'DIMM_2' has 512 MB (serial number 00006192) Slot 'DIMM_4' is Empty (RAM is about to be upgraded) Display Intel® 82801GB Serial ATA Storage Controllers - 27C0 Intel® 82801GB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF Primary IDE Channel [Controller] (2x) Secondary IDE Channel [Controller] ATI Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series [Display adapter] ATI Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series Secondary [Display adapter] DELL E196FP [Monitor] (17.1"vis, s/n FC9986152F6L, January 2006) Yes, I know it's a Dell, but 3/4 years ago, I knew nothing about computers. I have around £80-100 GBP budget to blow on a GPU which is better than my heap o' junk graphics card at the moment. A new machine is out of the question at the moment. Erhan Atesoglu 1050499 Posted December 21, 2009 at 06:05 AM Posted December 21, 2009 at 06:05 AM Well here's the kicker you got a PCI-E slot when most of the cards are PCI-Ev2. Most cards are backwards compatible so it shouldn't be too much of an issue, however maybe someone would like to chime in if they've had issues with it. So definitely upgrading you're ram is going to be about as big of an improvement as upgrading the GPU. For the GPU I would suggest either an 8800/9800. Preferably the 9800 since you'll be more likely to find a card with 1 gig. I wouldn't bother going any higher than that as I don't think you'll get any improvements. Otherwise you'll be perfectly fine with FS9, but you should be able to get decent frame rates with FSX so long as you play it conservative with the sliders... http://www.pond64.net
