Moshe Mizrahi Posted December 21, 2009 at 09:03 PM Posted December 21, 2009 at 09:03 PM Hi, I was thinking to upgrade my FSX dedicated PC and need your advice. Getting into the adventure of a total new machine based on I7 is a lot of money so I am trying to delay it in a year or so and in the meantime replace my "weakest link" which is the CPU (I guess). I do not like the OC stuff so I am looking at the best option for replacement. This is my current machine: Intel Q6600 @2.4G ASUS P5K Deluxe WiFi-AP 8GB Kingston HyperX DDR2@1066 (4x2GB) ASUS GF 8800GTX 768M 2x WD Raptor HD (10,000 RPM) Thermaltake V1 Volcano CPU cooler ANTEC P182 BLACK Case with 720W p/s OS Windows7 64Bit The system runs only FSX (REX2 Textures), ASX and FSINN. Will changing the CPU to QX9650 (extreme series) make a noticeable difference? Do I need a stronger cooler for it? Appreciate your feedback Thanks Moshe Mizrahi VATIL : Virtual is the new Reality Otrokovice to Haifa Virtual Flight Trip with a Cessna
Gary Morris 1090995 Posted December 23, 2009 at 01:33 AM Posted December 23, 2009 at 01:33 AM This is off the Intel statistics site Processor Number - Q6600 # of Cores - 4 # of Threads - 4 Processor Base Frequency - 2.4 GHz L2 Cache - 8 MB Bus/Core Ratio - 9.0 FSB Speed - 1066 MHz FSB Parity - No Instruction Set - 64-bit and you want to upgrade to Processor Number - QX9650 # of Cores - 4 # of Threads - 4 Processor Base Frequency - 3 GHz L2 Cache - 12 MB Bus/Core Ratio - 9 FSB Speed - 1333 MHz FSB Parity - Yes Instruction Set - 64-bit it will make a noticeable difference, but Graphics may also be the way to go as that is average compared to the GTX's available now
Moshe Mizrahi Posted December 23, 2009 at 06:18 AM Author Posted December 23, 2009 at 06:18 AM Thanks a lot! I am starting to thing the investment in the "old" generation is not so wise at this stage and i'm better to stop my OC fear and try it. Actually I found a nice guide and will clean the cooling and may even get a stronger one from those who fit both to 775 and to 1366. Erhan Atesoglu 1050499 Posted December 23, 2009 at 06:43 AM Posted December 23, 2009 at 06:43 AM Yeah the fans are basically the same the way they are mounted, just more pins in the latest sockets. http://www.pond64.net
Moshe Mizrahi Posted December 23, 2009 at 07:40 AM Author Posted December 23, 2009 at 07:40 AM I am a bit confused about the different models of the "ThermalRight" True/Black/Extreme stuff. Can anyone say which one is the favorite? I need it with 2 120 fans option. I have replaced my cooler to the Zalman 9700 and did the thermal paste stuff "by the book", i'm running my q6600 on 3.2G with temp around 35C (instead of 77C) Moshe Mizrahi VATIL : Virtual is the new Reality Otrokovice to Haifa Virtual Flight Trip with a Cessna
Erhan Atesoglu 1050499 Posted December 29, 2009 at 07:37 AM Posted December 29, 2009 at 07:37 AM 77C degrees? Wow.. I thought the Q6600 had the protection system. I know my i7 once you hit over 65C you go from 2.6ghz down to 1ghz or less http://www.pond64.net
